So let's ignore the daemon stuff they do for a minute. Is it me or does Black Templars chapter tactics fit the word bearers down to a T

Of course Templar rules fit Word Bearers much better than any actual Chaos rules... Loyalists get all the toys and special snowflake stuff they could ever dream of, but for some reason, Chaos isn't allowed to have nice things and instead we get blanderised in the name of keeping things simple.

At least Word Bearers do have the Crimson Slaughter codex to play off of... Better Possessed who also gain obsec, a unique Accursed Crozius artifact, the ability to make a Sorcerer into a Daemon for risk-free summoning, flavourful Warlord Traits, etc...
The only thing really missing is the inability to give VotLW to everyone as one would expect of a Legion warband, but then, VotLW is just paying pts to make already overcosted stuff even more ludicrously overcosted!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if a good number of Chaos players end up using the forthcoming new SW's codex in Feb to 'counts as' Chaos Marines.

I'm no expert on Word Bearers, but I don't see it, personally. I thought Word Bearers were all about cultists and daemon summoning? Black Templars prevent you from bringing a daemon summoner to the field, and their abilities all have to do with assaults. Word Bearers aren't bad in assaults, but they aren't really known for it the way, say, World Eaters are, are they? Black Templars get the "zealot" rule, right? I can see that fitting in with Word Bearers, but not nearly as much as some other chapter or chaos book that can still summon daemons, take possessed, etc.

That said, I can think of several loyalist factions that represent their chaos counterparts better than the actual chaos rules.

GK make good Thousand Sons
Several marine chapters including SW and BA do melee better than World Eaters (though daemonkin is pretty solid)
White Scars represent certain flavors of Slaanesh better than Slaanesh does (with the exception of noise marines).
Raptors/Ravenguard make pretty solid Alpha Legion. I actually run this pretty regularly.
Etc.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Not really, sure you can't take libririans but nothing forces you to take only crusader squads, so you can still take scouts and tacticals

Librarians being one of the best HQs (if not the best HQ) in the book isn't offset by Crusader Squads and what would be the worst buffs even without losing Librarians.
