Is it a transporter like from star trek or they come crashing down from space like a meteor? Silly question I know but I have always wondered how them bulky tank suits get around

It's usually a teleport pad or chamber that teleports them down to where they need to go.

It's a little of both. Teleportation, but they need to be somewhat close, and the impact is pretty violent, I believe.

I pictured it as like the time travel arrivals in the Terminator films, but less naked .

Probably exactly how the Stormcast Eternal fluff has them "teleporting" to an area, but described with more scienc-y and less fantasy type words: bolt of lightning (or energy, as the case may be) strikes the area, big kewl explosion and flash, boom Terminators emerging from the dust looking badass.

In The Emperor's Gift they just...appear. Just, pop, there they are. Some of them even train to start an attack before the port, so they appear mid swing.

Teleportation in the novels has either just had people appear out of nowhere, or there is a blinding gold light and a significant overpreasure heralding the arrival. My guess is longer distances release/require more energy.

In White Dwarf 112, Rick Priestley and Andy Warwick wrote:"They'll never get in. Even a chain fist wouldn't break down that barricade"

A pale blue glow appeared in the corner.

"You'd think they'd try, though. I mean, they're not even trying to get in."

The glowing blue mist rapidly coalesced. The crunch of metal echoed from behind them.

"What was that?"

The dark shape, now solid, raised an assault cannon and tore the two men apart in one fluid motion. A communicator cut through the static.

"Teleportation complete. Targets terminated. Awating further instructions."

And in a different piece of flavour text,
... One by one, the Terminator Squad faded out as the teleporter took them into battle. ...

I wouldn't say "nothing like"... 40k teleportation is more like ripping a hole in space, being pushed through, while relying on the personal forcefield generated by your armor to protect you. In Star Trek one is dematerialized and the energy that constitutes the person is transmitted through an annular confinement beam to shield it from signal degradation and disruption; ultimately reassembled at the destination. While the ST transporter de-materializes matter into energy, it ultimately transmits it through a subspace realm... In 40k the subspace realm is the warp and hosts daemons instead of the occasional macroscopic microbes seen in the STNG episode "The Realm of Fear"... Both require an integral protective field to prevent the person being teleported from being lossed; in 40k it is worn on the person requiring a great deal of power, in ST its part of the ship based system.

I find that mental image to be extremely funny. "Alright lads, we're telling the boys down there that we're being teleported in. But really, we're being shot out of an airlock. I hope you all brought a clean pair of underwear. Let's go!"

That's how Mobile Infantry are deployed in the Starship Troopers novel, the armored suits are fired out of cannons while wrapped in an ablative heat/stealth/re-entry shield.

I imagine after being assisted for who knows how long by the servitors to put on the Tactical Dreadnought Armor, they waddle into the Sacred Mechanics Transportation Chamber and receive a special blessing from a Chaplain, who intones something like "Emperor watch over those that are about to step into this 10,000 year old device that we have no understanding of! Bless them for the courage they are displaying in the overwhelming odds that this 10,000 year old device will fail, and at best, transports them instantly to the battle, or, at worst, send them to the warp where their very souls will be ripped apart countless times throughout eternity! If they are to be lost, then we beseech you Holy Emperor of Mankind! Slay them quickly so that their souls be not devoured by the Unholy Powers." And then a Purity Seal is added to their armor.

All eyes then turn to the Librarian who activates his Extra Sight, his eyes ablaze with his psychic powers. Gazing at nothing for a couple seconds, the light in his eyes fades and he gives a curt nod, as if to say "We can try it again, there is a good chance this device will work and this Terminators will arrive where we want them to."

Finally, all turn their gaze to the Captain, who stoically looks over all the Terminators, then pumps his fist and announces "In the Name of the Emperor, our enemies will know defeat!"

The Techmarine ushers in the Terminators and seals them within the device's chamber. He mutters "Emperor! Machine God of Mars! Please, please, please make this machine work one more time! I pray to you!"

Being Terminators, the Elite of the Elite Space Marines, they have no fear. As they step into the chamber, and the lights dim from the power usage, strange noises are heard from the device, servitors start scurrying around turning this wheel, or pushing abutton, and then electrical jolts play all around them just before a rent in the fabric of the universe is ripped open before them. I'm sure every Terminator wonders in that moment "Am I going to make it to the battle this time by the grace of the Emperor?".

After the flash and the chamber reopens, I'm sure the Techmarine looks in and says "I'll be damned. It worked again!".

Behind you

The novel for Dark Vengance has what is probably the best description of teleportation in my opinion, with an overpressure, and frost heralding the appearance of lightning, then the terminators appear....about 4 meters in the air above the enemy.

Guess that's why I like the Grey Knights so much. Despite practicing actual sorcery (or maybe because of it), they treat technology as technology, and leave its operation to those that are trained to do so.

There is a margin of Error with their deepstrike teleportation technology. They have the possibility to be teleported into rocks, walls, off cliffs, lost in the warp, ect. One example was a Terminator being teleported onto a Nurgle planet, and gets transported into a wall, only to be eaten slowly alive by bloated lice and spiders.

Star Trek teleporters do not use subspace due to impracticality and danger. Some have experimented with use of subspace transporters to increase range and possibly go through shields (TNG Season 7 Ep 22), but the transporter's tendency to explode immediately after making such a transport made it unfavorable.

Star Trek teleportation technology covered early, unreliable short distance trips to galaxy spanning, time traveling, precision transports, and that was just in the original series. Teleportation in Star Trek was, and still is, a plot device.

Teleportation in 40k is punching a tunnel through the Warp to connect point A with point B, or shifting into the Warp then back out again at a new location. Teleportation arrays appear to be Psyker driven, as chiors of Psyker servitors are mentioned in at least one book, while GK's are specifically mentioned to drive their personal teleporters in other books. And of course tgere is the Gate of Infinity.
