Hey Dakka,
I'm currently considering writing a renegade Space Marine chapter into my Necrons coalition. I LOVE the
Alpha Legion fluff, colors, insignia, etc., but I don't want to play Chaos. I really need help constructing this fluff
if it's possible. I was thinking that a group of Alpha Legionaries abandoned the Legion after its turn to Chaos.
Afterwards they keep a foot hold on their planet, probably somewhere around the Charadon sector?. I have
very little experience on SM fluff and background, etc. Also, what chapter tactics, Vanilla or FW, would best
represent an Ex-Alpha Legion renegade SM chapter. As for actual tactics I'm doing one of two things: 1.)
a vehicle/transport heavy army with lots of artillery(its definitely not Iron Warrior tactics ). 2.) Infantry/terminator
heavy army with loads of fliers. ANY help and advice/ suggestions, anything would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Kharne

Uh, have you looked at the Alpha Legion wiki pages? It answers a lot of your questions, specifically the "not Chaos" bit.

Yeah, I have but it only has 2 successor chaos warbands. It doesn't say anything about successor chapters. I could be wrong though.

The Traitor Legions don't have "chapters," as they are a post-Heresy thing. Legion splinters are warbands. A Renegade/Chaos Alpha Legion Chapter would suggest they stayed Loyal during the Heresy, then turned Traitor at a later point

I'm not gonna spoil too much, but there is infighting in the Alpha Legion, specifically between Loyalists and Traitors, during the Heresy (See Serpent Beneath and the Seventh Serpent for more).

As for tactics, whatever floats your boat. Alpha Legion has been represented with Tyrant's Legion, Sentinels of Terra, UMs Chapter tactics, CSMs, 30k SM lists, LatD (Vraks and IA XIII) etc. Their strategy generally included anything, but their Rites of War include having to take 3 SM squads in Rhinos, and gaining Outflank, so their tactics are very malleable.

Interesting, I'll definitely look into it. Any fluff suggestions?

There's the hands down best 40k piece of literature "The Serpent Beneath" by Rob Sanders. Legion by Dan Abnett explains why they sided with Horus, and Seventh Serpent by McNeill is about the Alpha Legion's infighting.

Nae bother

I'd rank them Serpent Beneath > Legion > Seventh Serpent.

The latter isn't actually very good at all, but it does have quite a bit of information.
