Sons of Horus Reaver squads can take chainaxes at +1pt per model, however this only gives them AP4. In 30k, where my only opponents will be other Marines, is there any point in this upgrade? That's an extra 15 points I could be saving per squad. I don't see the point in this option, please explain/agree.

Thanks

If you fight against 40k with your 30k armies or you face Auxilia/Cults maybe, but aren't Reavers supposed to be a shooting unit? I don't play 30k.

That would be a worry for me - My thallax have a 4+ and thier FNP(6+) isn't going to help much.

solar auxillia and the cults/militia lists would suffer too.

@Slayer-Fan123 no they're definitely an assault unit

@SirDonald ah I didn't think about non-MEQ in 30k, however I guess with the arrival of Calth, the majority of armies will be Marines...

The majority of armies are marines allready. Be it 30k or 40k.

Agreed. Against 90% of the armies you play, chainaxes are...not pointless, but no better than any other close combat weapon.

There's a reason world eaters get them free.

That said, the one time in ten you see something across the board with a 4+ save, you're laughing

Solar Auxilia will be scared, as will Mechanicum (thallax and adsecularis).

Imperialis Militia grenadiers will take extra casualties, as will enginseer's servo-automata units, but frankly if a unit of veteran astartes reaches them they should get turned to chowder pretty quickly even if they've only got chainswords.

Recon marines in scout armour, I guess, but again I don't recall ever seeing someone use them.

I'll be honest, if I was going to spend any points on reavers the banestrike shell loaded bolters are probably going to be useful more of the time.

Would you therefore make the Reavers into more of a 'gunline' unit than an assault-based one?

Inside Yvraine

Chainaxes are already useless in 40K, where only ~half of the armies are MEQ. They're just straight up worse in 30K.

No, they're too nasty in a fight, and lack tricks like Fury Of The Legion - standing in a gun-line will lead to them being shot to bits. But you only have to have a turn or two where they can't charge for the banestrikes to be worth having. The turn they pile out of a drop pod, for example. Combi-weapons are nice for the same reason.

They are only worth it for World Eaters - because they can take them for free.
