So new to the game and really like the ultramarines.

Gladius drop can be competitive. As a note, the only auxilleriy formations you can have are the ones on the list. IIRC Skyhammer is not on that.

Yes you could.

However, I would suggest that you consider White Scars (or most any other chapter) for a more competitive build.

With the Gladius Formation, You will already be getting One of each of the Doctrines (two tactical Doctrines), so the Ultramarine CT of getting one of each is mostly wasted.

White Scars (even in an all pod list) will give you Hit and Run and re-roll on Run dice. This is very helpful with a pod heavy list, so your troops will be more mobile.

Imperial Fists give you re-rolls on 90% of your army's 1's to hit (also kind of worthless considering you get the doctrines) and adds Tank Hunters to 2 squads.

Templars give you Crusader and AW, plus CA and Rage when shot. (decent for pod list, but meh)

Iron Hands has the 6+ FNP for all your guys, and IWND to all your pods (nifty, not great)

Salamanders gives you the 4+FNP against flamer weapons, the re-rolls to flamer wounds (Not melta antmore, grrrrr) And a free MC weapon on each character (again, meh unless you love flamers)

Raven Guard gives you the +1 to Night Fight and bonus to Jump units HoW. (underwhelming)

IMHO, white scars are the most competitive codex choice for the Gladius based on the bonus they give for a Pod army.
(even better with Bikes, Razorbacks, and Khan)

I saw the rule with khan,
Should I take rhinos?

If you go Salamanders, you CAN take Vulcan He'stan for master crafted melta weapons. Also, either way, you may want to switch to normal meltas on your drop pod tacts. Same points, but you don't have to snap fire the turn you drop in. Also, Ultramarine tactics aren't bad for the Gladius because the tactics stack now, so you can use a doctrine every turn.

And all the Us on their armor? Well you see the white scars successors stole a bunch of Ultramarine armor and weapons. Boom. Lore.

I personally think the Razorback/rhino/bike list with Khan is the Most competitive use of the Gladius.
This is the last I ran at a tournament a while back, which is not optimized by any means (1850pts). I would now change a fwe things, like include the "Hunters Eye" on my Chaplain, and make sure he is in the Command squad with 4 Grav Guns, as well as a few other small changes.

BC1

Khan- Bike
5 Command- Bikes, 3 Flamer, Meltagun, Apothecary
5 Tactical- Plasmagun, Combi-Plasma. Razorback- TL AC
5 Tactical- Plasmagun, Combi-Plasma. Razorback- TL AC
5 Tactical- Plasmagun, Combi-Plasma. Razorback- TL HF
3 Bike Squad- 2 Gravgun, Combi-Grav
5 Devastator- 2 Plasma Cannon. Rhino

BC2
Chaplain- Bike
5 Command- Bikes, 3 Grav, Apothecary
5 Tactical- Meltagun. Razorback- TL HB
5 Tactical- Meltagun, Combi-melta. Razorback- TL HB
5 Tactical- Flamer. Razorback- TL AC
3 Bike Squad- 2 Gravgun, Combi-Grav
5 Devastator- 2 Multi-Melta. Rhino

Aux- 10 Co.

3 Scout Bikes- 2 Grenade Launchers, Cluster Mines
3 Scout Bikes- 2 Grenade Launchers, Cluster Mines
3 Scout Bikes- 2 Grenade Launchers, Cluster Mines

(Command Squads also each get a HB Razorback for free technically RAW)
1848 Pts.

This allows every single unit in your army to scout- effectively letting you start ~12" from the opponents DZ in most cases if desired for a nasty Alpha Strike. You also have 27 Bikes on the table, along with 8(10) tanks, and 40 marines. 29 Units total. Very effective, and gives board control easily. Once again, not optimized list- but very deadly vs most opponents.

You can paint your army any way you want, just make sure you tell your opponent which chapter tactics you are utilizing. White Scars Chapter Tactics with Scout from Khan gives you relatively the same aggressive turn 1 style like drop pods, but has your whole army on the board turn 1. Plus, your tacticals are protected inside their metal boxes until you or your opponent force them out.

Just to note- I still think that the Pod List is very feasibly competitive- I just happen to have like 20 Rhino Chassis tanks, and only 1 Pod... lol.
But I will say that IMHO Anyone using white scars CT and taking Assault marines for the free transport VS taking bikes is making the wrong choice in a competitive list.

Wow Thanks for all the help!
Really helped me out!

I was thinking maybe instead of using a bike squad to maybe take an attack bike in place of the assault marines.

I think that full drop is still better as ultramarines. Probably, with Calgar. Not like White scars are going to help your extreme msu all that much.

I agree that Calgar is good, but White Scars CT def helps more than Ultramarines in a Competitive Gladius.

By forming the Gladius, you are already gaining 4 Doctrines- better than the benefit that Ultramarines gives you. Getting the extra 3 from being Ultramarines, for a total of 7 Doctrines is def not better than Hit and run + Re-roll runs (not to mention the benefits if you did take any bikes/Khan), which can win you games by allowing more board control, even in the pod only list. Hit and Run is very powerful with objective based missions. MSU being able to jump from a unit and getting to shoot them is also very powerful.

Would you razorback or rhinos with White Scars?
Of corse with khan.

If you are doing a full company list for the free transports almost always razors. Unless you have something better to be shooting out the top hatch. If you are going full 10 man squads, rhinos are nice to move them all together. But odds are you have 5 man squads in this case.

If you are not running a full company, it becomes a lot more situational.

I was thinking of shooting grav guns out the top of the rhinos.
And maybe adding two attack bikes with khan.

Is it worth to have a command squad in a pod or should I have them on bikes with melta's?

Also who should I throw Khan in with?
Tac squad in rhino?

Again I appreciate the help.
