Hi all, this last weekend I decided to play my in-progress Alpha Legion in a small local tourney using the new Adepticon Primer missions. They look to be taken straight from Warmachine/Hordes missions, and I think they were an absolute blast to play in 40K! Now all we need are Deathclocks...

Anyway, here is the list I played:

Spoiler:
Crimson Slaughter CAD:
HQ
1- Arkos the Faithless
ELITES
3- Terminators: Combi-Plasma, Lightning Claw on everyone
6- Chosen: 4 Meltaguns, upgraded to Draznicht's Ravagers, Dreadclaw Drop Pod
TROOPS
10- Cultists: Autoguns, Heavy Stubber
10- Cultists: Autoguns, Heavy Stubber
10- Cultists: Pistols, Flamer
10- Cultists: Pistols, Flamer
HEAVY SUPPORT
1- Fire Raptor Gunship: Autocannons, Balefire Missiles
2- Maulerfiends: Magma Cutters
Fallen Champions Formation
1- Cypher
6- Chosen: 4 Plasmaguns
6- Chosen: 4 Plasmaguns

On to the fun stuff! Round one, I faced the new White Scars, with all their cool Kauyon goodies. My opponent's list was approximately:

Spoiler:
White Scars CAD
HQ
1- Librarian: Level 2 (rolled for Prescience, also got the 4++ power), with the relic that gives his unit Ignores Cover
TROOPS
5- Scouts: shotguns
5- Tactical Marines: Drop pod
FAST ATTACK
2- Drop Pods
HEAVY SUPPORT
3- Grav Centurion Devastaors
3- Grav Centurion Devastaors
Crazy Stormtalon Formation (don't know the name, but it was cool)
1- Land Speeder
2- Stormtalons: Assault Cannons, Skyhammer Missiles
Skyhammer Annihilation Force
10- Devastators: 2 Missile Launchers, Drop Pod
10- Devastators: 2 Missile Launchers, Drop Pod
5- Assault Marines: 2 Flamers
5- Assault Marines: 2 Flamers
Inquisitorial Detachment
1- Inquisitor: Psyocculum, 3 Servo Skulls, Psyker Level 1 (got Perfect Timing and Prescience), Force Sword

Deployment/Alpha Legion Turn 1
Spoiler:

My opponent actually won the roll for first turn, but gave it to me. He null deployed and waited to spring his trap. I decided to oblige him and dump a ton of units into center and force him into a phone booth fight. I did decide to infiltrate Cypher and one of his Chosen onto my opponent's Emperor's Will, hoping to add a little pressure there as well, despite that being an end-game objective. My Dreadclaw came in spot on, and it sat dead center of the scoring zone, with Arkos and a unit of Meltagun Chosen inside. I opted to keep them in for now. I moved my Maulerfiends, AKA "Veronica", up to center as well, to prepare to smash some drop-podding Space Marines. I reserved two units of cultists, and deep-struck my Termies.

White Scars Turn 1
Spoiler:

Here comes the alpha strike! The Skyhammer came in, as well as two pods with Centurions. The Centurions fail Prescience and perfect timing, but the warlord's unit gets 4++ invul. He made the mistake of split firing a bit too much, and so only wounded some things instead of outright killing. My Dreadclaw was immobilized, however, after failing a single jink save. As was the Maulerfiend I had in the ruins. The Devastators that came in outside my deployment zone combat squadded and fired at Cypher's unit, but failed to pin them. One of those units I believe fired at one of my Cultist squads, who were easily pinned.

The other Devastator squad came down in my DZ, and also combat squadded. One of the units fired at my Chosen in the ruins, and pinned them. Damn. The other fired at the Cultists on the Quad Gun, also pinning them. One of this Assault Squads landed dead on near my Cultlists, while the other had a bad scatter. He then made the mistake of shooting my Cultists with his Assault Marines nearest them, and shot himself out of charge range, despite the re-roll.

The remnants of my Chosen squad after my opponent chewed through them.

Alpha Legion Turn 2
Spoiler:

The Hill is still contested, thanks to his Drop Pod, so no points. Time for reinforcements! My Termies, Fire Raptor, and one unit of Cultists come in. I decide to walk the Cultists far along the edge as a distraction, deep strike the Termies into the heart of battle, and line my Fire Raptor up to vaporize some Marines. I snap shot the Chosen in the ruins at the "normal" Centurions, and maybe did a wound; possibly killed one of my own due to Gets hot! Oh well. Arkos and his crew get out and prepare to assault the Centurions. I also made the mistake of shooting at them before charging, as I too failed my charge. In my defense, I didn't get a cool jump pack re-roll to help me. I split Cypher off from the Chosen as back-up though, and he would crush the Centurions in close combat with his Blazing Pistols, leaving just the Librarian and a single Centurion. I also used the Terminator's Combi-Plasmas on that same unit of Centurions, but my opponent had made some good 4++ saves. My still-mobile Maulerfiend made the charge in on the unprotected Centurions and smashed them to pieces before consolidating back toward the ruins.

My Fire Raptor (yes I know it's a Stormraven, my Raptor is still being mailed to me) shot its main Cannon at one of the 5 man Assault Squads, killing them all. I then shot the turrets at different Devastator units, killing a few. My Cultists even actually managed to kill a Marine with their pistols and Flamer.

White Scars Turn 2
Spoiler:

Apologies, I got lazy with picture-taking. His reserves all arrive, and he deep struck his Land Speeder just next to a ruins, within the scoring zone. Only one Stormtalon was pictured, but the two came in right next to one another. His other tactical squad came in and scattered badly, but was still within the scoring zone. Now he had an Objective Secured unit on the hill! My Cultists intercepted one of his Stormtalons, forcing it to jink and stripping a hull point off it. The Land Speeder would evaporate a few of Arkos' Chosen with Melta, and the Stormtalon did some work on his unit as well, thanks to getting to re-roll failed wounds from the formation. His Devastators on my right moved just a bit, shot at the remaining Chosen in the forest, failing to pin them. The other unit shot at my Cultists (I think) and pinned them. His Scouts Outflanked basically right onto my Emperor's Will Objective, and his Devastators continued to pin my Quad Gun Cultists, but couldn't kill too many due to line of sight blocking. One of his Assault Squads murdered my other unit of Cultists that had gotten a reprieve turn 1. Cypher finished off the Centurion and Libby Warlord. Due to us both contesting the zone heavily, at this point the score is just 2-0 in my favor thanks to First Blood and Slay the Warlord.

Alpha Legion Turn 3
Spoiler:

This was a bloody turn. Arkos, having had all his buddies bushwhacked, joined the Termies. The Chosen in the ruins came busting through, along with Veronica, Kool-Aid man style. Arkos' boys shot, along with the Chosen, at the Tactical squad near the Land Speeder and Drop Pod, killing a few. Arkos and his Cataphractii killers multi-charged the Land Speeder and Tacticals, easily killing all. Veronica, I mean the Maulerfiend, made her charge thanks to her fleet re-roll into the Obsec Drop Pod, easily killing it.

This turn, the Fire Raptor shined. It dropped down into hover, unloading the Main Cannon onto a Devastator squad, killing all but maybe one. The left turret, with a touch of help from newly arrived Cultists, killed the Scouts, and the right turret snap fired at a Stormtalon, forcing it to jink and actually taking a hull point. I can't remember how, but someone shot one of the Stormtalons out of the air this turn. The blast didn't hurt anyone from Crash and Burn.

White Scars Turn 3
Spoiler:
I don't think I snapped a pic this turn. He hovered a Stormtalon and fired at the Chosen near it, but due to snap firing, failed to kill anyone. I also got lucky in that his Devastators fired at that Chosen unit, trying to wipe them off the Objective, but only killed one. He made his morale check and clung to the Objective stubbornly. On my left flank, his other Devastators were trying to get over to my Emperor's Will, but were having a difficult time with difficult terrain and the fact that a Fire Raptor was staring them down. He was in a tough position.

White Scars/Alpha Legion Turn 4
Spoiler:

My opponent was effectively neutered. However, he did have a few Marines alive in my back field right at the Emperor's Will, and he had a Stormtalon that went into Hover on his Emperor's Will. For some reason, we were thinking he would get a bonus to his jink for being in the forest. Despite a 3+ jink, his Stormtalon went down to Cypher's pistols. I ran Veronica over onto his Emperor's Will in case he could pull some magic out and make a long charge into my Chosen there. We were short on time, and told him my plan was to mulch his Devastators with Arkos and his Termies. After we rolled for my charge range, and I easily made it, we called the game. My Fire Raptor easily can wipe out his remaining Devastators on my Emperor's will. In just a single turn, the game went from 2-0 to a massive win for the Alpha Legion!

GAME 2 will be up as soon as I can

I was homeskillets opponent for game one and really had a good time.

The missions were interesting to say the least. We were told that we would be playing the 2015 missions, but at the last second decided to player the primers which was a fun switch.

Neither side really had many obsec units and I will agree with what he said, I did split fire a bit much hoping to immobilize the heavy hitters early on which I think may have cost me the game or at the very least made it closer game.

OK, on to game 2! Here is an approximation of my opponent's Chaos Marines/Demonkin Army:

Spoiler:
Khorne Demonkin formations
HQ
1- D Thirster!
1- Juggerlord: Axe of Khorne, Powerfist, a Relic armor that gives Eternal Warrior
GOREPACK
3- bikers: 2 meltaguns
3- bikers: 2 meltaguns
10 to 15- Khorne Dogs!
5- Possessed Marines
WAR MACHINE
1- Helbrute: Multi-Melta
HERALD
1- Herald of Khorne?
TROOPS
8- Bloodletters
8- Bloodletters
Chaos Marines Crimson Slaughter CAD
1- Sorcerer: lvl 3, Demonheart, on a bike, spell familiar (this guy got Invisibility, which is all that matters)
1- Sorcerer, lvl 3, on a bike, spell familiar
10- Cultists: stock
10- Cultists: stock

My opponent won the roll for deployment/choosing first turn, but actually deferred to me. Thus I deployed first, and he did not attempt to seize the initiative. This mission also had two zones we had to control each turn, though these were offset on the right and left side of the board. Additionally the secondary mission was Kill Points!

Alpha Legion Turn 1
Spoiler:

Knowing I had Infiltrators to help me choose which zone I wanted to go take, I put a unit of cultists behind my Aegis line, so they were actually in the scoring zone from the start of the game. I put my Maulerfiends central, not knowing how my opponent would deploy; I knew they would be crucial in tying up those dogs at some point. I put another cultist unit in the ruins near the Aegis line, as a backup if/when the others got mulched.

On the left flank, I put two units of cultists. My opponent lined up all his dogs across the deployment line, spacing far apart, and joined the Sorcerers and Juggerlord to them. Possessed took up the right flank, and his own Cultists took to the forest near his Zone. He kept the D Thirster fairly central, probably with the same idea I had for my Maulerfiends. The bikes each took a flank. I Infiltrated both Chosen units hard on my home zone, hoping to do a nasty alpha strike and whittle down those Khorne puppies to make them manageable. My opponent did not scout, knowing he wanted to charge turn 1. My turn consisted of the Dreadclaw coming in into my home zone, and Arkos and his crew jumping out. I shot EVERYONE except the cultists on the quad gun at the dogs. I think I killed about half of them. I was hoping for a few more, but them's the breaks. The lame Cultists killed maybe a single possessed Marine, possibly two. My Cultists on the left flank moved up cautiously, just enough to get into his zone. My Maulerfiend moved up as an escort.

KDK Turn 1
Spoiler:

Khorne's little buddies had a very good first turn. His Sorcerers got Invisibility off on his dog pack, and the Juggerlord split off to join with the bikers on the left flank. The D Thirster glided on over to Arkos' unit. His bikers on the right flank used their Meltaguns to explode my Dreadclaw. The ensuing explosion killed about 5 Chosen from the various squads around it! Thanks to me shooting his dogs apart, he was forced to consolidate awkwardly, which hampered his movement; he would ultimately fail his charge in the assault phase. The D Thirster made combat, however, but not before Arkos' Chosen put a few wounds on him from Overwatch thanks to Preferred Enemy. Also note that Arkos hit the Thirster with 4 attacks, and wounded with all 4, which could have killed the Thirster before striking. My opponent then just went ahead and made ALL his invul saves! And then did about 2 trillion D Thirster attacks on the unit, smiting them to ashes. His possessed Marines made a charge on my Chosen, and rolled up AP3 weapons for their mutation. My Chosen took a few Possessed out, but the unit was slaughtered.

Another view of my zone after the dust settled.

My opponent decided to go after Veronica with his Juggerlord instead of Cultists. Unfortunately for him, he rolled garbage and only managed one glance. Fortunately for him, he's really good at making invul saves, and only took maybe 1 wound if any. He tanked them all on his Eternal Warrior tough guy face, laughing at my S10.

Alpha Legion Turn 2
Spoiler:

Veronica runs up to charge his dogs, needing to keep them locked in combat. I believe Cypher split off to kill his Bloodthirster, while Cypher's last few Chosen killed the Possessed. Note that the score was 2-0 for my opponent before this turn, as he had First Blood and Slay the Warlord. At the start of this turn, I gained 2 points for controlling my zone with my Obsec Cultists. I was contesting his zone with my Cultists on the left flank.
My Fire Raptor did not come in, but I believe I deep struck my Termies in his backfield; I tried a ballsy DS near his Hellbrute, trying for a rear armor shot, but scattered badly toward his dogs. I believe I shot the Termies Plasma at the bikers, killing all but one, who made morale.

Veronica continues to hold up the murderous Juggerlord on the left flank, and my Cultists need to wait for a good opportunity to make a break for my opponent's zone.

KDK Turn 2
Spoiler:

The Juggerlord fells the Maulerfiend, who failed every IWND roll each turn. Lame. However, the Lord is down to 2 wounds. With his Blood Tithe maxed, my opponent summons another Blood Thirster on the right flank! Sonuva! The dogs were forced to pile in on my Maulerfiend on the right flank, and they did nothing to him. Despite invisibility, I was getting lucky with a single 6 each turn, I believe, squishing one puppy. He scored no points thanks to my Cultists contesting his zone, and me dominating mine. He summons a unit of dogs right in my Zone, and a Herald in my ruins. Damn these Demons are annoying.

Alpha Legion Turn 3
Spoiler:

Cue "Flight of the Valkyries". The Fire Raptor came in and just wrecked the place. I dropped all 4 Balefire Missiles on his Cultists, killing all of one squad and a few of another. I then shoot the left Turret at the remaining Cultists, and kill most of them. The right Turret shoots his Helbrute in the butt, knocking out its Powerfist and stunning it. My pistol-wielding Cultists on the left flank now move up confidently, running to the center of the zone (away from the super scary Juggerlord). My autogun Cultists on that same flank move up and to the left, still getting toward the zone, but spreading out so his Lord can't multi-charge easily.

Things were a bit fuzzy here for me, but Cypher gunned down a Herald who had deep struck in the ruins. The Chosen shot one of the newly arrived puppies. I believe my Termies STUPIDLY jumped into combat with the Invisible dogs to attempt to help, but did very little. Two more points for me for dominating my Zone.

KDK Turn 4
Spoiler:

The dogs were being whittled down, and his Bloodthirster glided over to say hi and help smash the Maulerfiend. I believe he deep struck in two units of Bloodletters. One landed in my Zone right on my Aegis line, and the other mishapped into ongoing reserves.

His dogs had some chew toys in the form of my Cultists. However, the Cultists managed a few wounds on both overwatch and in combat before being run into the ground.

He summoned some more dogs and deep struck and then ran them closer to my Cultists. His Juggerlord charged the autogun Cultists, and took a wound on overwatch! But then he murdered them easily and consolidated toward his Zone.

Alpha Legion Turn 5
Spoiler:
Sorry, I forgot to take pics as this game got going. My Fire Raptor continued to be nasty, dropping into hover in his zone. It shot with is main cannon at the Khorne Dogs that had deep struck in, killing all of them. The Left turret finished off the Helbrute, and the Right one shot at maybe some dogs. There were dogs all over this board, it was ridiculous. My remaining Cultists charged into his remaining Cultists and beat them down, consolidating away from Juggy. My Maulerfiend held up the dogs and Bloodthirster in combat yet again, and Cypher and his boys went to town shooting either Bloodletters or Dogs.

KDK Turn 5
Spoiler:
Nothing picture worthy at this point. However, the game ends in spectacular fashion when the Juggerlord comes over to take out my Cultists. He charges in, and is hit by a single AUTOGUN shot in overwatch. That shot wounds him with a 6! Juggerlord fails his 3+ armor, then fails his FNP and is killed! Holy crap! With that, the game ends. I was ahead 6-0 on Zone scoring. My opponent had First Blood and Slay the Warlord, and we both had Linebreaker. When the dust settled and we counted up kill points, we had tied at 9 each. Slight victory for the Alpha Legion!

Game 3 was against the shiny new Tau, including the dreaded Stormsurge! The deployment was Hammer and Anvil. The mission had 3 "Meat Grinder" objectives in the middle that were each worth 2 points per turn. Then we each had an Objective in our DZ for last turn scoring. Here is my opponent's approximate list:

Spoiler:
Tau Hunter Cadre
HQ
1- Commander: toolbox, but without Iridium armor
3- Crisis Suits: 2 Fusion guns each
10- Fire Warriors: Devilfish
10- Fire Warriors: Devilfish
10- Fire Warriors: Devilfish
1- Riptide: Ion Cannon, EWO
5- Broadsides: Missile Drones for each, EWO
5- Pathfinders: Marker Lights
5- Pathfinders: Marker Lights
1- Stormsurge: not the D gun

Deployment/ Tau Turn 1
Spoiler:

This is a hard counter to my list. Worse yet, my opponent is a good player who won the roll off to lay terrain, and for first turn. He wisely took the largest, flattest piece of terrain and planted in the middle, thus ensuring a shooting gallery at centerfield. He also won the roll for first turn. I had no choice but to Infiltrate as close as I could (which was not close at all), and bank on stealing the Initiative with Arkos' re-roll. If I outflanked, I would get shot off the board as soon as I arrived thanks to all the EWO. Unfortunately, I did not seize.

A pic of the other flank.

My opponent gets aggressive with his Stormsurge, as he should, and bullies the center of the field. His Riptide took a wound from trying to overcharge. The Devilfish and Warriors move up.

His Broadsides went to town with their Tank Hunters, easily destroying my Maulerfiend for First Blood. I believe the Stormsurge shot at Cypher's unit, but some bad scatter meant he only killed MOST of the squad instead of all of them.

The Devilfish, Warriors, and Riptide laid some hate on the other Chosen squad, reducing them to 1, who passed morale. Pretty baller first turn.

Alpha Legion Turn 1
Spoiler:

Maulerfiend moved up into the ruins, was out of charge range, so ran up to hide from the scary Broadsides. The Cultists on the quad gun actually immobilize the Devilfish on the right side. Cypher et al tried to take out some Pathfinders, but he made all his cover saves. The lone Chosen tried to do the same, but also failed.

I dropped the Dreadclaw in his back lines, and opted not to get out due to the Interceptor I knew was coming. Sure enough, his Broadsides wrecked it with their S7 tank hunting missiles. I popped out right next to his Broadsides to make sure the Stormsurge and Riptide couldn't drop Templates on them next turn.

Tau Turn 2
Spoiler:

He turns and fires a lot of units at Arkos and crew, and kills them all except Arkos, who I believe had one wound remaining.

Cypher, the lone Chosen, and some Cultists are obliterated. Hiding in ruins actually helped, as the Maulerfiend survived. His Fusion Suits mishapped back into reserves trying to get close to that Maulerfiend.

Alpha Legion Turn 2
Spoiler:

The Fire Raptor came in, and was promptly Intercepted by Ignores Cover Tank Hunters. 2 Hull Points gone, and stunned.

The Maulerfiend stayed in the ruins to avoid Supporting Fire, and paid for it by failing the 5" charge on the Riptide, despite my fleet re-roll.

Having a stunned Fire Raptor, and a failed Maulerfiend charge, I decided to make sure Arkos had a place in Valhalla, so I charged him into the Broadside unit. He survived the Overwatch, and issued a challenge, which the Commander declined. Wuss. Arkos chopped through some drones and put a few wounds on the Commander (he was closeest, and failed a few LOS!). He was then of course cut down by the rest of the attacks in retaliation, as all I needed was to fail one.

Tau Turn 3
Spoiler:

His Fusion crew came in, this time sticking the landing. However, it only took one Destroyer Missile shot through the ruins from the Stormsurge, and the Maulerfiend blew sky high. The rest of his army shot my Fire Raptor out of the sky, and went to work on the Cultists. After that turn, I decided to concede, which I almost never do. It seemed like a waste of both our time, as all I had left was Cultists, and I had not destroyed a single unit; the worst damage I inflicted was to immobilize a Devlifish. Once the Terminators dropped in next turn, they would be intercepted off the board. CRUSHING VICTORY FOR THE TAU!

Alpha Legion Turn 3
Spoiler:
Cheater! I'm dead already!

Honestly, I think at this point in 40k tournaments HAVE to set up symmetrical and fair terrain. Theres way to many potential matchups where its just baby seal clubbing from the very start without decent terrain.

games like this are why so many people hate playing tau. Your not even playing the game half the time with all their nonsense, so it's basically pick up your models and let them roll tons of dice.

And missilesides are like the worst unit in the game, their just so frustrating xD

Thanks! I was thinking on that afterward, and I think I made the right call in not outflanking my two units of Chosen, but what do you guys think? That was really the only other major tactical decision I could have made, I think.

Sometimes it can screw you, but honestly I like players setting the terrain. It feels less predictable, like a true battlefield. Sometimes it works in your favor, and sometimes it doesn't. This particular instance...I got eradicated!

Yeah, I kind of knew this would happen once I lost the terrain roll and the roll for first turn. But, it sucks less when you know it's all in good fun. I knew going into this tournament that Chaos Marines were not going to win. Honestly, I had no business beating the Space Marine list in the first round. But I wanted to play some cool new units that I got painted up, and so I gave 'em hell!

Many battlefields are predictable, as at least one of the fighter chose the location of the battle. No battle arrives by accident with a decent intelligence service.
Well, that goes for the "set your terrain" vote that I do not prefer. Btw, war is unfair. But gameplaying should be fair for both parts.

Very true, sir! From a game play perspective, I will say that truly "fair" terrain placement makes for very predictable battlefields, which (for me) is not as much fun.
