Subject: Kojima finally leaves Konami: Creation of Kojima Productions and partnership with Sony Announced
Glad to see Kojima is finally going down the independent route, seems like the partnership with Sony is to get their budget rolling since I doubt a freshly made game studio has the start-up funds for anything triple A to begin with. Works out pretty well for PS4 owners like myself.
Anyone else think he looks pretty haggard in the video? Guy has gone through hell and back with Konami, good riddance.

Seeing that fella talk and articulate like a Japanese person but being Caucasian was a bit weird for me :/ probably as I never managed to pick the language up as well as he evidently has, on topic, this is good news to me.

The mission statement of Kojima's new game studio is pretty cool:
We are Homo Ludens (Those who play)
From the moment we enter this world, we instinctively invent ways to have “fun,” and share those inventions with those around us. We’re not asked to do this, nor we do need reasons to create. It is simply who we are.
We find one another and compete with one another. We laugh together and cry together; all while playing together. Our experience bind us and liberate us. To share our most valuable experiences, we create stories, invent tools, and evolve the art of play. Play has been our ally since the dawn of civilization.
“Playing” is not simply a pastime. It’s the primordial basis of imagination and creation. Truth be told, Homo Ludens (Those who play) are simultaneously Homo Faber (Those who create).
Even if the earth were stripped of life and reduced to a barren wasteland, our imagination and desire to create would survive – beyond survival, it would provide hope that flowers may one day bloom again. Through the invention of play, our new evolution awaits.
KOJOMA PRODUCTIONS – We are Homo Ludens. We are those who play.
It's certainly one heck of a way to start off a new chapter in his life.

My question is...is he retaining the rights to the Silent Hill IP?
I only just bought my first ever Silent Hill game two weeks ago, Silent Hill 3 (I enjoyed the movies so thought why not) so I have no strong connection to the franchise, but it was heart breaking to see what Konami is planning for the franchise despite never having played Silent Hill before. Fething Pachinko machines???

No, unfortunately. I do believe Konami still retains all the rights to SH.
Kojima may, however, use the ideas for the SH game he was working on to create something else, he is just not allowed to put "Silent Hill" on the box.

I'm not a fan of all Kojima's works, in fact, I hate MGS IV with a passion and I disliked V too, but I still think Kojima is a genius. This sound like great and exciting news for everyone, now that he is free from Konami's shackles!

I fully agree! I can imagine he'll create a spiritual successor to Silent Hill, even if he can't name it or use the town itself. And it shall be glorious!

Like his games or not, Kojima is one of the more innovative, out-of-the-box and artistic game producers around. There's just *ideas* put out that may work or may not, and they're always novel.
For example.
In Snatcher, an early use of 'making it like a movie' through cutscene and voice acting, an early idea was to coat the disc in a special coating that when read at a fast read speed, it'd give off a smell. In this case, it'd have been used to have the smell of blood fill the player's room, when you encountered the murder scene. That's insane. It didn't work naturally, but still.
Classic MGS1 moments of 4th wall breaking. (Snake, listen for the helicopter! Oh wait, you have a Mono TV) (Psycho mantis reading your game's memory, and playing with your controller rumble). Plus just the insanity of that series from there.
MGS2's controversial bait-and-switch main character may or may not be popular, but it was unique.
Other smaller innovations too are a big deal.
ZoE's fast flowing controls and just plain fun and visually appealing gameplay
MGS5's complete disregard for starving the player of any resources. Use whatever weapon you want, you can always get more ammo by calling it in.
etc.
So even if you don't like the games, I think his stuff keeps introducing good ideas. Just look at how well recieved the brief PT was.

No, his gameplay ideas are much better than his story ideas.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Anyways haven't really spent the time to dedicate to his games so I have no opinion on them that being said I know he's a well respected video game designer and is very innovative so I'm excited to see he's back in action even if I'm not surprised by this news (someone that talented
shouldn't have trouble finding work).

I have not played his games. But how much of them are him, and how much are the rest of his team? He knows, and so do Konami, but do we puny mortals have any way of knowing?

His stuff is popular and it's always cool to talk about how much you don't like popular stuff. However he's popular enough that you have to be wary of the fact other people do like him so you say good luck.

Or you can like some of what he's done and respect his accomplishments without feeling a need to fawn over him. I think he's done some great work, but is also overhyped and often overrated and his story writing style has too much incomprehensible gibberish mixed in with it, like bad fanfic. I have some problems with things like the way Quiet in MGS V is dressed as well, and the "reasons" fit it are both ridiculous and internally inconsistent with other parts of his "world".
I also don't give two feths about how popular or not someone is in terms of what I'm going to say about him, nor do I feel that I need to criticise anyone in order to "be cool". On the other hand, I don't feel a need to fawn over someone who is popular nor keep my own opinion to myself because he's popular. "Wary" indeed.
None of those things mean I approve of the way that he was treated by Konami, nor does not being a huge fan of his mean that I can't hope the best for him with his new studio. After all - when he produces something I'll overall enjoy I can buy it and when he produces something I have no interest in I can easily ignore it. Same as any other "auteur" or game studio.
