I'm getting into Infinity and I want to use it as an opportunity to paint camouflage. But before I risk ruining a hard-to-strip model, I've got a question:

I'm painting my bases in a Mars-like theme using Reaper Paint's Redstone series, and I want to paint the army/squad/what-have-you in a camouflage pattern using the same colors. Is this doable, or would it be a bad idea?

It's possible but I'd suggest;
1) Use the colour sparingly;don't make it the dominant colour.
2) No camoflage will be exactly like any kind of soil;this should allow you to either darken it a little or lighten it.I'd lighten it.
3) Paint the base in the colour then wash it with a shade like like Agrax or nuln oil,that should separate it a lot more from the model.

I'm guessing that means I should confine the pattern to only armor, or only fatigues, etc.?

If I use the darkest color for the basing, I should use the midtone for model itself?

What type of camo do you want to do? Digital camo isn't terribly difficult for 28mm, tigerstripe is also not bad (but doesn't really fit with mars), 3 colour desert is a pig that I wouldn't even consider.

I'm considering either digital or a "block" pattern.

If you can get past the voice in that video, the painting is top notch for digital camo
