Subject: [1850] - Astra Militarium - ITC Competitive Tank List
I'd like to build a Competitive list for ITC events with a few self-imposed restrictions. 1) The only available Ally is Militarium Tempestus 2) I want to include 3+ Lemun Russ Variants. 3) No Super Heavies.
This is what I was thinking, but any feedback would be appreciated.
Version #1 (Cadian Battle Group):
Spoiler:
Advantages: Preferred enemy on Las Guns. Better ability to use Orders. Better Mobility. Preferred enemy on Plasma and Melta when shooting at a unit controlling an objective. Hellhound.
Cadian Battle Group Battle Group Command CCS (Camo Gear, Master of Ordinance, Las Cannon Team, 2 Sniper Rifles) <- Deploy on Ruins. Go to ground if anything looks at them. If gone to ground, use "Get back in the Fight". If not, use "Fire on my Target"
Emperor's Fist Armored Company Engineseer <- Rides in one of the Chimera or hides out of LOS. Demolisher (Dozer Blade) Vanquisher (Las Cannon, MM sponsons) Eradicator (HB Sponsons) Tank Commander: -Command Punisher (Pask, Dozer Blade, HB Sponsons) -Executioner (Las Cannon, PC Sponsons)
Emperor's Blade Assault Company CCS in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Helhound (Dozer Blades) Veterans (Carapace, 2 Plasmaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Veterans (Carapace, 2 Plasmaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Veterans (2 Meltaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades)
Militarum Tempestus Platoon 5 Scions
ETA. The Scions were just to fill points. Initially I spent a bit more on the Vets, but eventually decided it wasn't worth it. In ITC Scions could be useful deep striking onto objectives.
Version #2 (Void Shield Generator)
Spoiler:
Advantages: A few extra special weapons. More flexibility in List Design. OS on Chimeras. Void Shield Generator.
Emperor's Fist Armored Company Engineseer <- Rides in one of the Chimera or hides out of LOS. Demolisher (Dozer Blade) Vanquisher (Las Cannon, MM sponsons) Eradicator (HB Sponsons) Tank Commander: -Command Punisher (Pask, Dozer Blade, HB Sponsons) -Executioner (Las Cannon, PC Sponsons)
IGCAD: CCS (Camo Gear, Master of Ordinance, Las Cannon Team, 2 Sniper Rifles) <- Deploy on Ruins. Go to ground if anything looks at them. If gone to ground, use "Get back in the Fight". If not, use "Fire on my Target"
Veterans (Carapace, 3 Plasmaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Veterans (Carapace, 3 Plasmaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Veterans (3 Meltaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades) Veterans (2 Meltaguns) in a Chimera (Dozer Blades)
Void Shield Generator (3 Void Shields)

Funny... I was thinking today how I would build a list and came up with just about the exact same thing. I skimp a little more on my Russ and don't use a demo russ and brought a battle tank with a lascannon(because potms).
Above poster, hell hound is the ap4 torrent variant. Also the artillery doesn't have much synergy with the russes. Come with no boots on the ground to apply pressure. But! I does do well with the 165 infantry core choice.

I like this. But was there not enough points for the artillery formation? How many points is your Emperor's Fist formation?
Not much flex at all as it is built. The Emperor's Fist formation is more than 900 points, but is 1 of the 2 options for building a Cadian Battle group. The other one is 160 infantry.
Is the Hellhound the one with the AP3 flamer? That's the one you want to counter Assault armies.
Solid advice. The Hellhound is S6 AP4 torrent. The Bane Wolf (Which I could take in place of the Hellhound) is S1 AP3 Poison(2+) template. I was thinking t he Torrent made the Hellhound the better bet, but I see how the AP3 might be worth it.

It could help quite alot. Unfortunately the Cadian Battle Group doesn't allow it, and there isn't much flex in the list. It might be the case that the Cadian Battle Group isn't worth it at 1850. I'm not really sure.
Yeah, depending on the mission I feel that assault and high mobility armies could be an issues. Guessing that jet bike/fast attack armies will be a problem. There is also things the skyhammer annihilation force or the grey knight teleporting makes things get up close and person fast. Most armies will shred what you have for close combat and tanks don't do so well once the enemy is next to them.
I would also second a void shield generation. I know that you are not going to have super heavy but your opponents can and some of the super heavy weapons can wreck armor in a round or two. A shield generator should mean that you wont lose a tank in round one.
The list has good mix of weapons, plenty of ap2 and some blast to dealt with hordes. The only thing that I might be weary of is only have 6 weapons, three of which are short range? that can damage a 14 armor.

I don't see why you are taking the Cadian Battle Group and instead just take the two formations on their own. The CCS and Scions you are taking just to make it the Cadian Decurion aren't doing anything useful

The Scions are scoring an objective somewhere. The CCS is providing fire support, and giving all of the lasguns preferred enemy. They can also give out orders to any Vets that disembark because of their 24" range. I would drop them in favor of the formations and a CAD, but the CCS and Scions don't add up to very many points. Possibly I could do a CAD + the Tank formation. I'll mock that list up, and add it as a variant.

I think you underestimate the firepower of this list. Most bike lists and high mobility armies will be losing mobility fairly quickly, and I have decent mobility in the list as well. Grey Knights shouldn't be a problem so long as they aren't being used as an ally for a centstar. Grav is the biggest fear.
Ravenwing cover saves can trouble this list a bit, but I actually have a decent amount of Ignores cover, and can always disembark some vets for more of it.
You are correct that there isn't much CC power in the list. Initially I had a powerfist in each squad before I added the Scions. Yarrick was in one version. Basically, IG lack good close combat options, and so even if I spend points on them, I'm still losing to other armies in CC. I decided to play to my Strengths with mobility and fire power.

Can sentinels take power fists? I know sentinels are terrible, but I've met one guard player who screens his tanks with sentinels to take charges. Better than ogryns?

I know that will the fire power you have you should be able to shred most mobility armies in the open field. I was thinking about a mission in a city where line of sight is short and cover is abundant. And if you are going to play the mobility game void shields are not going to do much, then again they give a great advantage in a shootout against something like tau.
In terms of the grey knights I was the mostly referring to a centstar, however the 30" teleport on the dreadknights can be problematic too. But, then again centstar played right with a little luck can give any lists trouble.

Yeah... that is why it is nice to bring space marines or grey knights to help with the close combat. But not that is an option for you. One thing you might consider is that you could have is a tempestus platoon or two hang out in a taurox, taurox are fast and with the missiles and autocannon they can be annoying, admittedly the armor is paper thin. They also have two fire ports so if had two flamer and or two metla gun in the unit those could fire as well.
