Rather than 4+, how about each weapon having its own target value? This is something I've been coming to appreciate in simpler games. A broken bottle might damage on a 5+, a knife on a 4+, a sword on a 3+, etc.
It allows you to vary the chance to kill the target on the weapon without resorting to pools of dice for the more lethal weapons. You can still also go the multiple dice route to vary it up more. Like, a broken bottle on a 5+, a knife is a 5+ but gets 2 dice. A staff on a 4+, s bladed staff gets 4+ on two dice. It also lets you easily have a damage scale by just adding or subtracting from the weapons damage value. Tough enemies increase the target value, weak enemies decrease it.
It gives you the effect of a
WS/
BS or S/T table without the complication.
