Hi people, this is my first post in this subforum but I recently got it into my head that I would like to collect parts of the LotR range. Was looking at the minis still available at the GW site and in most cases it is clear what material they're in: metal or resin/finecast. However, for quite a few the material isn't specified, and I was wondering if anyone here knew what was up with that. Basically, I'm thinking of purchasing, but only if they're in metal. Specifically, these were the ones I was looking at:

* Hill Troll Chieftain Buhrdur
* Barrow Wights
* Dead March Spectres
* Sauron the Necromancer
* Elladan foot and mounted
* Murin and Drar
* Wood Elf Sentinels
* Elf Command
* Rohan Outriders
* Cirion and Madriel
* Osgiliath Veterans
* Rohan Loyal Guard

Anyone know if I'd get these in metal or finecast if I ordered them direct from GW?

I believe all but the elf command ( depending on which) are finecast, though high elf and wood elf are metal. galadhrim command I believe is finecast.

Yep, Galadhrim Command are finecast. I was thinking of the high elf one, this one: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-SE/Elf-Command
Metal then you think?

So did you like Krellnus think the rest on my list (the non-elves) were metal, or do you believe them to be finecast? I didn't quite get you there.

Sorry can't disclose.....infiltrating

Everything is metal on that list except for one item, that being Sauron the Necromancer (and regular Sauron, for that matter).

Kinda the same here, except the Vanquishers of the Necromancer set which would have been impossible to do in metal (and was also one of the most painful finecast kits to assemble ever)

Why would those figures have been impossble to do in metal? I don't see that they are that different from other figures that were previously released in metal.

Fine cast technically no longer exists. They reworked the formula to improve the resin, and dropped the now toxic fine cast brand. They just call it resin now.

it still sucks. Plastic>metal>finecast. Forgeworld resin is ok but comes with plenty of its own issues. Lead may have been better then finecast.

If you want a definite 100% answer, I would contact GW directly. They will usually get back to you within hours if they have the info readily available.

I actually purchased the Wood Elf Sentinels, Rohan Outriders, and Rohan Royal Guard direct from GWUS recently (a couple months ago). I think those at least were still metal, but I'll double check when I get home today.

If the description says it's in resin, then it's finecast; otherwise it's metal.

The problem is the miniatures the OP asked about do not say one way or the other in the descriptions on the GW website.

I ordered a Rohan Royal Guard (a blister each of foot & mounted) and a Rohan Outrider recently and received them 2 days ago.

All 3 are metal.

I would suspect that any that do no specifically say resin will be cast in metal.

On February 16, I ordered the foot & mounted packs of Arwen, Elrohir, and Elladan. They arrived yesterday, all metal.

Right, as I said, they're all metal unless they specifically say they're resin.

And it's just as bad, if not worse.

The Thranduil ft/mtd is a beautiful model ruiined by the materiel. The Mirkwood armoured swordsmen, spearmen, and archers, are the worst models I have ever had the displeasure of working with in my life. (Especially as I built and painted them on a vacation day ~10 days ago) They might call it resin, but it's the same terrible spongy yet brittle finecast mess it's been for years.

An addition to the metal vs fine cast issue with miniatures on the GW website. I recently ordered some Morannon Orcs which were described as a "plastic box set" of 12 figures. What I actually received were three clam shell packs of four FINECAST figures each. Right number of figures, wrong material. :(

So, the descriptions on the website may not be 100% reliable.

Sounds like that's something worth contacting GW about, Morannon Orcs are most definitely a sprued plastic box set (and a great one at that, probably the best Orcs in the range), so you have been sent the wrong stuff (Gundabad Blackshield, perhaps? They're one of only two 4-model finecast Orc sets I can think of). Send GW a pic and let them know; worst case scenario you lose nothing, best case and most likely scenario they send you the correct box and you get to keep the resin ones as well.

Pics of what you should have got vs what you might have got.
Spoiler:

Morannon Orcs:

Morannon Orc Commanders (finecast, though if you got this set x3 then you're laughing, they're more than a single set of Morannons each! Though still contact GW)

Gundabad Goblins:

Can you post pics of these?

I'll have to double check when I get home, but I ordered both the Blackshields and the Morannon Orcs at the same time so I know I did not receive six clamshells of Blackshields. It was three clamshells of Blackshields and three clamshells of something else. I could swear that were marked Morannon Orcs, but I'll check the contents to be sure that's what they really are. The invoice that came with the order definitely said "1 Morannon Orcs $24.75US"

My first thought was to call GW about the order, except I actually received them at least a month ago, and just noticed the discrepancy recently. Still, I guess the time lag shouldn't matter. No matter what's in those clamshells, what they sent was not what I ordered.

If they're Finecast, they're not regular Morannons (might be the command set), they were only ever in plastic. GW are usually pretty good with these things, so it can't hurt to ask.

Please please post pics, I'm so very curious. Perhaps they sent Gundabad orcs instead? (in which case, congrats, they are $25 a pack - for three models!)

They were originally packs of 3 metals, spear and sheild only, I have several here.

Ah, my bad. Don't imagine they'd have been Finecasted, though, as the plastics exist.
