Hello all! Recently I was browsing through a local hobby shop and stumbled into their X-Wing section, I must say the models for the game are excellent. I looked up some brief game play videos and it looks intriguing.

So... How would y'all recommend I start? I am looking to represent the Imperial forces, perhaps I can finally defeat the rebels and bring peace and stability to the galaxy as it was always meant to be.

Secondly, I noticed game size seems to be fairly compact, typically composed of 3 to 5 ships per force?

Last but not least, I saw the TIE-Interdictor, this looks bloody amazing. Is it a viable ship? I want whole fleets of these.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

Start with the starters, they're good value, then expand from there. Either is good, common wisdom is get two plus an expansion for each included ship, as the pilots and upgrades differ. Balance is good, so you can collect what you like and not be scared of getting obliterated.

Don't fixate on only playing one faction, the games not really built to work that way. Having a preference is fine, but upgrades are scattered all through the different expansions, and just because an upgrade comes with a ship, it doesn't mean that's the ship it works best with.

Games are typically 100pts, as that's tournament standard, which, yes, normally runs 3-5 ships, it is possible to run more (or even just two) but that's probably a good average.

There's no Interdictor. What you saw was the TIE Punisher, which very closely resembles it. You can only run a few, properly equipped, in a standard game, and, as I said, pretty much everything is viable, but they're definitely more towards the "hard" end of the scale, and you probably won't win many tournaments with them, but any list, built with a little intelligence, stands a chance.

Outflanking

Grab one of both starters, and the blisters for each. This gives you a decent starting number of ships, allowing you to play full games for either faction. It also gives you a variety of pilots to play with, while keeping variety of ships low for your first few games. After this, buy what you like (Most stuff is viable, although the TIE Defender is a couple months of of it). If you can proxy upgrade cards, do it. If not, you are going to have to try to buy them off of other players, or bite the bullet and buy a lot of Rebel and Scum ships.

The generics aren't very good. Deathrain is amazing, and Redline is decent-ish. I'd suggest buying one of them but no more.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Yeah, 3 to 5 is pretty standard. You can go down to 2 really loaded-up ships or to 8 TIE fighter swarms, but those are edge cases. Things like 4 B-Wings is the kind of stuff you see a lot of.

My advice is, get one of the original and the Force Awakens starter sets. That'll give you 50ish points of barebones ships for each side, before upgrades. 1 or 2 more ships for each side should be able to get you to the standard 100 points.

You might want to poke around this a bit:

Be prepared to spend a lot of money is all I have to say.

You can wait until they go on sale to pick them up, but in the end, you're still going to be spending quite a bit.

Define a lot?

Because compared to the late WFB or W40K, this game is downright cheap. I'm not complaining, mind you.

When I finally looked into what the prices for the game are I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised, I currently play Warhammer 40k as Imperial guard so X-Wing prices don't seem bad at all.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well I picked up the original trilogy starter set, as well as a TIE-Punisher, an A-Wing, and a Y-Wing.

Plenty of Rebels, and plenty of Imperials to wipe them out with.

If Warhammer is what you're measuring X-Wing to then yeah, X-Wing will be dirt cheap in comparison.
Heck, may as well throw in Armada too. I certainly have...
