A random ditch next to a zoo (self imposed exile)

I've just finished this book and I'm dying to know one thing: who the hell is Epimethius?

This Grey Knight, who's one of the main characters in the novel, is referred to as one of the founding members of the order who fought in the Horus Heresy (he's found in some kind of stasis-state) and that "Epimethius" is simply a cover name for someone else, someone to whom Supreme Grand Master Kaldor Draigo refers to as "Lord" in an awed whisper. Abaddon said:

Spoiler:
"The brother of ten who became a brother of eight. [Dark Angel Supreme Grand Master] Azrael and his whelps would tear this planet apart if they knew who you were."

Abaddon also said he was interested in Epimethius's gene seed, which earlier in the book was revealed to have come from the Emperor. I got the impression that this isn't typical of all Grey Knight's, further implying something very special about this particular Grey Knight. Abaddon ruled out the possibility that Epimethius was really Loken because he said he "watched my erstwhile brother die". He then asks the Grey Knight if he's "the Ultramarine" before ruling that out because he didn't "have that look about him".

I got the impression that Epimethius was a Dark Angel or maybe a Night Lord, but whoever he is he's one of the ten founding members, apparently. Does anyone know?

"How many people here have telekenetic powers raise my hand" - The Emperor, The council of Nikae

"Never raise your hand to your children, it leaves your midsection unprotected" - The Emperor

"My father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic" - Kharn

Spoiler:
Zahariel El'Zurias of the Dark Angels is probably the most likely candidate but then you also had the discussion with the Tzeentch daemon in which it claimed that Epimethius had swapped destinies with someone else, so at this point it could be anyone.(Zahariel is also one of the top contenders to be the Cypher that is running around 40k)

This is right. The swapped destinies can refer to more than just that, i.e. swapping places with the original knight intended to watch the gate. There is enough ambiguity that if the heresy gets their knickers in a twist and forget (which is likely) they aren't committed, but it was the intention that it was the above. I'd love to see a sequel to it, and Christian really needs to put his red pen down more and pick up a black one.

Also - the Ten Brothers are the statues of pre heresy dark anģels now carried on the darkshroud speeders.

The Eight are the original grey knights - there are eight brotherhoods, each with a grand master.

The way I think it happened was Zahariel was supposed to be Cypher, but switched with who was supposed to be Epimetheus. He defied his destiny, which is why the Changer of Ways is confused. That leaves the question of who is Cypher.

I kind of hope not. Epimetheus doesn't have a happy future in store, according to the black legion codex...

But yeah - I think it's mostly there to keep their options open. Black Library wants to leave the identity of the original Grand Masters open for as long as possible - they've pointedly said that the knights-errant are a separate entity and there won't necessarily be any survivors of them amongst the grey knights founders.
