Just bought a few soulgrinders from GW and only came with a big rectangular base.
For 40k do I need to buy a big oval base?
Or do I need to base them at all?

The Rectangular Base is for use in Fantasy Battles. You can use it for 40K, but I don't know many who would require it.
And no, you don't need to use a base it does not come with.

I say no if you don't want to, because Soul Grinders use to come with no bases at all (mine didn't). However, having a base would be nice, as the feet usually gets scratched up and having a square one helps identify armor facings, since the Grinder is one of those "not exactly sure where the back ends" type of vehicle.

The rules assume that the model is mounted on the base it came with. It doesn't matter if that base is rectangular, the rules still assume that you're using it. Not sure if the instructions tell you to ignore the base for 40k, though.
That said, I wouldn't have a problem with you using no base at all, and since it didn't use to come with one, I doubt many people would call you out on it. I use 150mm rounds bases on mine to keep things simple, and measure a square around the base to determine armour facings.

The rule book says, for Walkers, to measure to the base if the Walker has one, or to the Hull as you would for a normal Vehicle if it doesn't have a base. The example it gives of a Walker without a base is a Defiler. Given that the Soul Grinder kit shares the entire lower torso assembly with the Defiler kit, it would seem perfectly viable to use it without one.
Or put it on the rectangle base so you can do a cool scenic base for it. Either way the rule book doesn't seem to particularly care.

plus if you really don't like it you can just say your Soul Grinder came from a time where there weren't bases (again, mine never came with one).
