So on the tau hammerhead tank you can pay 5 points for the submission shot in the railgun. Does this unlock the profile to use as if the gun had two, or does it replace the solid shot?

It becomes another weapon profile you can switch to INSTEAD of shooting the solid shot for that turn. but you aren't stuck with only anti infantry blast. you can pick

Sweet, that makes it a lot better than I thought.

I really enjoy my hammerhead, for 125 points its a decent anti-vehicle and anti elite non-eternal warrior killer. but it suffers from what all 1 shot weapons do. they magically roll misses more than a longstike bs should ever be excused. Anecdotal evidence, but i've played my fair share of games with a bs5 pilot landing 1 hit all game letting my enemy ignore him. It's embarrassing to fail to pop a rhino 4 turns in a row...

Thats my problem with anti tank right now, high strength is only one shot, so hurting av 13/14 is super difficult.

outside of deepstriking into melta range with crisis suits, you are stuck ignoring the super high armor, or just taking your 50-50 roll of doing damage to av14 (4 glance 5+ pen). what a hammerhead may be better as (i don't actually run it this way) is dedicated anti infantry with the ion head. its dedicated anit infantry and can go up to s8 with a blast, potentially ignore cover (w/ML support). and then you are up close more to let your smart missiles do their job

The ghostkeel is also tempting, especially with the formation.

I agree, but bear in mind he/she still needs to be withing 9" to get the melta advantage, and you risk scatter on a bs3 platform with a small blast template. the advantage is you should probably have TL fusion guns as well to shoot.

What is the meta that you are fighting? AM with leman ruskies? or some astartes and av14 all around?

I've pretty much stopped taking railguns if I want to have a chance at winning. Always end up either missing or somehow failing wound rolls.

I love me some Hammerhead Railguns but the Ion Cannon is the real workhorse. Melts Necrons and MEQ blobs like crazy. Railgun is just too expensive for 1 shot and you rarely get to take advantage of the massive range without a ton of terrain/bodies getting in the way but the submunition is often times fairly good at putting down some low risk light infantry killing.
