If the wording were "any drones are removed" then there could be ambiguity; but that is not at all the wording.

It is "If the commander has any drones" and then "the drones are removed".

The Commander only has drones that are bought for him; drones in units joined are not drones the commander has.

If I were to guess, the Coldstar rules were written by someone that did not realize Independent Characters that are Monsterous Creatures can still join units when they wrote the rules for how Drones interact with the Coldstar in glide and swoop modes. When layered together, the rules interactions cause unforeseen oddities to occur, which lead to lengthy discussions. GW really needs to hire a line editor.

Ummm.... nope. I think they realized it fully properly. You are just confusing the relationships and context of the Drone references.

Or they knew it and wrote the rules fine and no oddities occur as has been pointed out umpteen times to you now.
