Subject: Which country produces the second-best crime/police/detective dramas?
Yeah, I think British crime shows have the best volume-to-quality ratio I've seen. There are some nice American ones, but I think they're the exception rather than the norm.
I'd second sweden as second-best, from my limited experience.
See my earlier post, regarding having to share Jessica Fletcher with Britain (as Angela Lansbury is British).

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

I really liked the concept of Battle Creek and the two main characters had a wonderful dynamic. I couldn't get into it unfortunately. The show just couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to be taken seriously, semi-seriously, or not seriously at all and it gave me mood whiplash
EDIT: And now that I think of it, has anyone seen Life? I really loved the main character and myth arc (even though it got rushed to be finished by the end of the series). Would have loved to get more of it.

The Wire was only a police procedural for the first 2 seasons. I think relegating the series to that is missing how ambitious the Wire was and how amazing an experience it became EDIT: Especially given that the first two seasons of The Wire were easily the least interesting and engaging of the five.

I liked all the Seasons, I do think Season 2 was the weakest. I thought Season 1 was quite strong.
I'm not relegating The Wire to anything really, but it is primarily a crime/police/detective show.

I was just talking about that show today with a co-worker!
Man, I loved that show...

Until the UK produces a series as good as The Wire, they'll get a strong #2 in this genre (Ripper Street IMO is the best UK-produced crime drama).
Sherlock homes 84-96?
Considered a masterpiece.
Tinker, tailer, soldier, spy...... Haha the wire..... Hahaha
Come back to me when the americans produce ANY TV as good as just these shows.
The Wire was far superior to either of those shows. They exist in entirely separate universes of goodness. Eye of the Behodler and all that, I suppose.

I watched Justified ... but then again I am a Timothy Oliphant fan ... and the lady who played Ava Crowder was smoking.
Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)
