Really? i'd be interested in seeing that list. As someone who buys multiples of every release, I wouldn't have thought it was possible to have a list that required that amount of purchases. Most small ships can be had for around 10 bucks. Large for 20 bucks. That amount of dough equates to 50 small ships. You can only field between 2 and 8.
Not saying its not possible, but sounds like a fairly hefty exaggeration to me...

I doubt you could get thdm for under $15 each, but I'm sure you could get one of everything for well under $500.
The only way i see it happening is that you buy 6 ships for a single upgrade card to use on yiur entire force which doesn't include that ship.

Fairly true. I have started playing X-Wing and like the game and i can understand the desire to get all the cards and not having certain cards is an annoyance, For example you have to buy the blockade runner to get C-3PO the Raider To get Palpatine etc. But as far as 500 dollars you can buy all you need carefully if you use The fantasy flight website to know which models to buy and which cards you would be better off buying on ebay.
But AoS is just taking what was a great and challenging game and throwing the whole framework away and replacing it with a game that is supoposed to be fun but the lack of gamin balance takes it away.

People play X wing in any other way than 'buy at least one of every ship because it's STAR WARS and you want at least one of each anyway?

It's missing the point to say that a few players who are very keen on high level competition for X WIng have spent $500 to get the right bonus cards to make a really good llist. Most people have a great time without spending all that money.
What could you get for $500 if you bought AoS stuff?

In Australian? One Salamander and 32 dwarves.
Technically more models, and a whole AoS army if you want it to be. I think it is considered an average to below average sized army though.
Flipping it though a hundred dollars does get you playing x wing casually.
A hundred in AoS gets you... a box of ten dwarves down here.

Of the current 'cool kids' stuff?
$250 for "Auric Runefather on Magmadroth, an Auric Runemaster, a Battlesmith and two units of Hearthguard Berzerkers. Sixteen miniatures in total!" ( GW quote)
Twice.
So.... 32 plastic toy soldiers for your $500.

Or you can buy 6 "Start Collecting" boxes for $510, let's say two boxes each for three armies, which would give you three very playable armies of ~30-40 models each for a total of ~100+ miniatures, many of them cavalry, chariots or monsters.

GW have done a pretty good job of shutting those down. There is always ebay, but ordering from the US is a b and our own online retailers are averaging a measly 15% off.
I'm sure I could get them cheap but there is a big difference between seeking out a cheap price for something expensive and being able to just walk into a store, see something on the shelf at a reasonable price, and decide "I'm going to grab that while I'm here".

I know things are particularly bad for Australians, but I was talking about $500 USD worth of stuff.
It's about £340 GBP, or 450 Euros, or $700 AUD.

It's difficult to include Australia in any discussions on price at this point because the AUD has been falling since 2013. At the moment Australian pricing doesn't look too terrible when you convert AUD to GBP or USD because the AUD is the lowest it's been in the past 7 or so years.

It's running about ten cents higher than it was a year or so ago (currently, what, 2.04 to GBP?), but things are certainly moving in the right direction.

I'm not sure if you're saying our dollar is getting better, or if you're profiteering off our dollar going down...

The forge world chaos dwarves are about 5000x better, but you pay for it.
This is most certainly a case of YMMV. Personally, I rather like the Mantic Abyssal Dwarfs, and I'm seriously considering picking some up as KoW seems to be catching on locally.
On the other hand, I find the FW Chaos Dwarfs boring and uninspired. They may be well sculpted but IMO they are well sculpted lumps. I would not buy these, even if they were selling for the same price as Mantic's offering.

FW CD's are the best version yet, as far as i'm concerned...
those little balls of armor are awesome, and the Bull-Centaurs rock!!!
i don't see how anyone could dislike them, let alone prefer the Mantic minis...
you would literally have to pay me to even touch a brush to a Mantic mini...
i'm sure glad i live in a world with the choice
cheers

I love the FW chaos dwarfs . I actually commissioned a sculptor to make alternate arms for them... some years ago now for the weapon options they lacked. But Mantic's KoW is finally prompting me to finish the army and get playing it, so it's a very interesting world we've living in at the moment
The only thing I disagree on is the Bull Centaur, jah - I love the look of the Tau'Ruk, but they're just too large! Unfortunately, some replacements I just got in are the opposite, small even by OOP GW standards... so I'll be sticking with the best middle ground option I've found - the Volmarian bull centaurs. They're quite beefy, but not something like 5x their old size like the FW ones are! According to the fluff, a dwarf has to give birth to these, after all...
