I don't play 40K as much as I used to, over the past 2 years I have been playing a lot of STAW. It's a great game but it doesn't have the creative aspect that WH and 40K have. So going through some old things I decided to dig out a project I started almost 20 years ago (wow I feel old). So if we hop in the Wayback Machine, in the 90's I started an IG army based on the Praetorians, but I wanted them to be more German than English.

This is what I came up with. Oh yeah, check out those Goblin Green bases it was the standard back in the day. I had about a platoon of these guys and they served me well for many years. These days they look a little aged.

A few years ago I pulled these guys out and gave them a face lift, but I only finished a few models. This look is much cleaner. The helmets and rifles stand out better and the bases don't look so fantasy.

Here is the the face lift to the commanding officer. I decided that the officers needed to stand out more so I gave them gold trim on the helmets. (though this guy may be moving down to platoon commander, more on that later)

The command squad is about where I stopped.

The other day I was looking for a project to do (and the wife said don't spend any $$ ), so I went digging through the hobby room and dug these guys out. After 19 years I figured it was time to finish these guys.

Over the years I have amassed quite a few.

Infantry and HQ

Heavy Weapon Teams (mostly used as Lascannons)

Heavy Bolter Teams (6 of them, a work in progress)

I am going to start back up with the command squad, but I think a new senior officer is needed. This is what I came up with from the depths of my bits bin. I think he could make a good stand in for Yarik or Straken. I'm happy with it, he will look better with some paint though.

When I do play 40K it is mostly 5th ed. In 5th the HQ can have a bodyguard. I thought about an Ogryn for Nork, and Scribor makes a few good German looking ones, but I have to keep the wife's warning in mind. So I came up with these. I like the dog, he is an old Dark Elf Warhound. I think he fits in with the rest, but I may paint him to look more like a Rottweiler (needs to look more German). This old dwarf model cracks me up, so he is a keeper

The command squad will have a lascannon. This is what I am using, it's an old Ork Splatta Kannon, slightly modified. Years ago a buddy of mine grabbed me a bunch of these and Zapp guns Between the two I have 13, 12 for heavy weapon squads and 1 for the command. (man it was nice to have friends that were GW employees, those days are gone)

After the command squad is updates.I will finish update the bases, rifles, and helmets on the 1st infantry platoon. I will move the old senior officer with the powerfist to the 1st platoon officer. After that I will focus on the 2nd platoon, they are already on bases

The standard infantry all look about the same. Here is a look at the officer for the 2nd and 3rd platoon, just some minor head swaps.

I can't take credit for this one, I saw it online somewhere, some Praetorian blog.

Here are the models I will be using as Sargents, I think I have enough for 3 platoons

There are about 5 or 6 head swaps throughout the army. They are either from converted Mordians or I needed the helmet for someone else. Here is the standard look of a trooper without a helmet.

This guy was originally intended to be a Master of Ordnance. For now I think he will just be an officer for the heavy weapon teams.

Along with this guy. I'm not a big fan of this one, too weedy, but will do for now.

I have a couple heavy bolter teams put together. It's a simple conversion using an Ork shoota for more of a WWI look over the old GW style. Only 3 are assembled, but I have the bits for 6.

I have just enough models for the Command, 3 platoons, and 18 heavy weapons. That's a lot, but I want a few more for some extra's, advisers, characters, tank crew, etc. So I had an idea . I had luck a few years back making halflings out of GS, so I decided to try it again.

I started with this guy.

Then I pilfered some Legos from the kids...

And a few hours later, RESULT!

Turned out pretty good, even the back has a good about of detail.

The last time I made halflings I got about 50 models out of a tube of GS. If I can get even half that out of these I may add in some special weapon teams, these guys seem perfect to for plasma rifles. These guys will let me save some of the metal for conversions

So the plan for now is finish the command squad, then focus on platoons, then heavy weapons, and hopefully add in some more GS guys. Wish me luck

That is a cracking looking force. Looking forward to seeing the modern version.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Can you explain the process of making the green guys? I like how great the detail is, and I might want to try and duplicate the process if I can.

"There's too many of them..." *static*

Thanks. It will be a slow plog but I'll try and get some more progress done in the next few weeks. The family and I just got back from vacation so playing catch up a bit.

Sure . I'll try and snap some step by step shots this weekend. You get a surprising amount of detail out of a simple press mold.
