I'm curious, given the lack of point systems and no apparent 'average' agreed upon by the community I want to know roughly what size games people play.
I worded the poll as 'x models' an I know that might not be the best way to ask since people might go out there playing 10 monsters against 100 infantry, but I didn't really know how else to ask.
How long do your games average is another question I'm interested in, and perhaps even what sized table you play on.
I know when I heard Fantasy was going skirmish I liked the idea of 10-30 models, but nothing I have seen really seems to play at that level.

I play 30-60 models mostly - I wouldn't go as low as 20 personally, but from 30-60 is the sweet spot in my opinion, with bigger games for when you have more time.
Sounds like AoS fills the niche you are after pretty well Jono. I get the feeling recently that you are warming up to AoS ;-)

A warhammer fantasy skirmish game would very much have filled a niche for me, I still think the new setting is silly and have no interest in a game that can't be played mildly competitively

I've always like playing big games, and although a lot of people tend to call AoS a skirmish game I still like to play with big armies. The lack of points is a lot less noticable when both players bring a lot of models. It does take a few hours, but then so did big games of WHFB.

I highly recommend checking out Facehammer and Heelanhammer podcasts. They're both run by some of the biggest tournament names in the UK scene. They've talked a lot about how the game can be played competitively and the hosts of each are running the SCGT this year. Face hammer especially was quite skeptical of the game until the hosts started playing in tournaments.
I put 50-100 models. It's about 20 pool choices in Clash Comp or 1500/2000 points in SDK found on www.scrollbuilder.com. Generally consists of a few foot heroes, a big monster, couple of shooting units, a few core units and a couple of elite choices.

Can't answer the poll as I am all over the place - played a 30 model game just before Christmas, gearing up for a 300 wound mash up in about a month. Our games cover the spectrum.

Until recently, I only had the starter set models, so 6ish warscrolls, 50ish models was where I played at (and enjoyed), but now that I have the Seraphon and Slaves to Darkness Start Collecting boxes, I'll try both smaller games (SC vs SC, 3/4 warscrolls, 40ish models) and larger games (SC + starter armies, 10ish warscrolls, 90ish models). I only have a 4x4 table available to me, so I think 90ish models may be too many.

Some of the legitimate complaints you had Jono, are starting to be met by Games Workshop. For example, I can remember you complaining that there were no dungeons, cities, people's outlined in the fluff to begin with (I shared your complaint) but GW have slowly started to bring the world to life. For example the Fyreslayer battletome has a scenario where a group of native peoples have paid the Fyreslayers to slay a Vampire Queen and they must enter the dungeon where she resides to do so.
They are doing it slowly, but they are making the Mortal Realms an interesting place in my opinion.
Also, for competitive games: www.scrollbuilder.com works a treat with either system :-) Automatically Appended Next Post: Sqorgar wrote:Until recently, I only had the starter set models, so 6ish warscrolls, 50ish models was where I played at (and enjoyed), but now that I have the Seraphon and Slaves to Darkness Start Collecting boxes, I'll try both smaller games ( SC vs SC, 3/4 warscrolls, 40ish models) and larger games ( SC + starter armies, 10ish warscrolls, 90ish models). You're talking total models right? Everyone else (correct me if I'm wrong) is talking about 1 side. You can easily fit 45 models a side on a 4' x 4' and have a fun game. That's the side of my board at home too :-)

I played in a clash comp based tournament at the weekend in the UK which was 20 out of 30 pool choices, that worked out as the following army for my Khorne Bloodbound:
Archaon
5 X Wrathmongers
5 X Skullreapers
10 X Bloodwarriors
40 X Blood reapers
2 X Blood Secrators
1 X Exalted Deathbringer
1 X Skarr Bloodwrath
1 X Mighty Lord of Khorne
1 X Skulltaker

I tend not to go by models but by wounds, especially as my main army is Ogres. So If I played with model count it would be very one sided.

It's not a full 4x4 board (it's actually a hexagonal bumper pool table), and if I use the felt gaming side of the table, I lose another 6-8 inches for cup holders and poker chip holes. With all my terrain set up, even just the starter set contents fills the table almost too much.
But my wife has this corrugated metal board that is super sturdy and light weight that I'll be able to just rest on top of the table, just as soon as she finishes her 5,000 piece puzzle. I want a gaming table, but there's no room. She wants to do a giant puzzle and suddenly we've got a 6x4 sheet of corrugated metal. I play a 40 hour video game and I'm wasting my time, but she spends 92 hours on a puzzle and it's "therapeutic". I'm starting to think there is a double standard going on in my house...

well over 100+ , I find the games that are 50 models and below are super boring scrumfest in the middle. one of my complaints is this feels in no way a skirmish game, it feels like warhammer watered down edition. The fluff for me is what nearly killed the game,. I have never liked sigmar, EVER. he is a dull uninteresting character who couldnt even manage to be "the lead" in his own trilogy. we first played the game with battallion box only and it was not too bad, we then tried smaller fights and those turned fast into snoozefests, when we got over 200 models it got into a confusing scrum in the center of the board. so despite my rant, I go back to 100-150 seems pretty good. using the old battallions ( and coincidentally the skull pass or isle of blood forces) turns into a pretty ok game. fast and done. AoS is shallow, but shallow on purpose and when embraced as such is a good time filler.

Giggity.
I'm honestly surprised (in a good way) by the poll results. I expected to see more with over 100. We've played several games with different model counts, wound counts, unit limitations or minimums and it's great to get insight from the wider community. Since a few months ago my gaming group would never play without a scenario so that makes it much easier to select forces in what "feels/looks right" rather than worry about trying to even out forces based on 8th edition. One of the best games started with about 140-160 models per side in large horde units at the start of a battle but quickly by turns 2&3 the table was pretty sparse. Made for a nice narrative, too

We've largely been using our old 2,500 point WHFB armies in AoS, and they're 100-200 models normally and fairly balanced against each other. When you have more units the game becomes a little more interesting than just a massive mosh pit in the center of the board.

I will agree the game becomes interesting when there are enough manuever elements to fight a battle as opposed to scrumming the center.
