So I am at a crossroads. I have come into one of my boys' army of boyz <-- See what I did there???

Seriously though, here is what is in the box:
40 Slugga boyz
4 Big Shoots Boyz
1 AoBR Warboss
3 Deffkoptas
5 Lootas (4 plus a mek)
1 Ghazhull Thraka

wow, when I write it down it seems kind of puny... The options are: 1) Keep it and paint it and build it up (leaning toward this, seems like they would be fun) 2) Sell as a package on eBay

At any rate, if I do keep them, what do I need (apart from more boyz, shoota boyz is what I was thinking, maybe around 40, or 30 and 10 more sluggas)? I heard trukks are bad, but I see that many lists have them. Apart from that I am looking for suggestions

Trukkz are garbage but that doesn't mean they aren't useful. You should only take trukkz though in large groups. If you have 1-3ish trukkz they will just get killed first and now your 90pts of transport are gone and probably killed 1/3rd of your boyz inside.

Fielding them in large numbers with bikers or battlewagons though makes the enemy pick and choose what needs to be destroyed first so you can guarantee some will get through.

What you need to get is

Bikers
Battlewagons
Mek Gunz
Painboyz

The Core of a good ork army these days is Bikers though. Infact the only tournaments where orks do well they usually field Zhadsnark's Biker boyz army.

Depends on what you want to build out of this. You can get a lot of transports, some big gunz or more lootas and call it a day.

Hey Sorry I forgot to add this, I also have:

1 Dakkajet
15 Nobz

so the actual list is:

40 Slugga boyz
4 Big Shoots Boyz
1 AoBR Warboss
3 Deffkoptas
5 Lootas (4 plus a mek)
1 Ghazhull Thraka
1 Dakkajet
15 Nobz

Sorry fr the omissions...

Buy or make your own trucks with rams and put those boyz in them (give the boyz eavy armour for protection from exploding transport, give them a nob with bosspole and pk)
Use those bigshoota boyz as counts as lootas (add a few extra gun bits and they'll look the part) and have a squad of 9 walking with a warboss in mega armour with da finkin kap (the guns will get relentless and have a 2up meat shield, use th w ghaz model to represent the warboss who'll be your warlord). Run the defkoptas separately and use them as early harassment and objectives grabbing,.
Now for the aos warboss you can have a warboss with eavy armour and pk with one of the squad 9f boys, but he is good for conversion work (since his legs are so wide it is easy to stick him on a warble or toy bike and have him become a warboss on bike with pk and da lucky stick).
Use the loota mek as an extra mek to a tach to either of the warboss's squad as a way to accept challenges without risking the boss in challenges with a most likely superior melee character.
So run them as is, have the loota slowly walking up the board shooting light vehicles, flyers, and enemy ranged units. Run the 4 trukks up as far as they can, drop off the boys for krompin and then use the trukks as objective campers. With tl rokets on those defkoptas you can easily pester both marine and vehicles.
Use this list in smaller point games. Get a feel for the army what tactics work best. For future purchases check out the forums for inspiration (specifically the tactics thread, there is a huge thread on their for orks that can help you see what 8s good and bad for orks.....I would link it but I don't know how to do that on my phone).

The dakka jet is good, give it 3 supa shootas and Waaagh plane that thing for good damage.
The nobz are rubish as their own unit, use the models as conversions for nob upgrades for boy squads...or get creative with some platicard and other bits and make them into meganobz (a reAly good ork unit...they will need trukks to transport them though).

Trukks are not as ad as people claim. You NEED speed in this age of 40k. I put Eavy Armor on sluggaz, and keep shootaz bare. Shoota trukks soften up units with we dakka shots, and sluggaz crump the remains

And if you turn those 15 Nobz into meganobz then you can run the bully boyz formation from the ghaz supliment. Many agree it's a good formation, just get 3 trukks or battlewagons. I would suggest forgeworld transports, but they don't have rules for their orks on their site anymore (I suspect new release of rules but no actual rumors yet)

Looking at the models you have right now, you already have a good start on a 1000pt list. Try a few 500 point skirmishes with 2x 20 Boyz+ PK Nob, a Warboss, and the Lootas. This will help you learn if you like the army or not. If you like rolling buckets of dice, Orks are a lot of fun.

As far as next steps:
I'm a fan of Trukks and Deffkoptas, and also of Mek Gunz. Lobbas almost always earn their points back; indirect fire small blast templates for 18 points are a steal.
As others have said, bikes are the way to go if you want to run a competitive list.
Sadly Ghazhull is not competitive; his stats don't live up to his fluff.
Meganobz (MANZ) are competitive, and a good use for your Nobz models.

Good luck!

I'm firmly in the "sell it" camp. Inheriting an Ork army is like the old Nepalese proverb:

To take revenge on an enemy, give him an elephant -- first he must thank you for the gift, and then the elephant's appetite will deplete your enemy's resources.

I love Orks, but I chose them and never had any pre-conceived notions that they were a competitive army. I put them on the table for a bit of fun and so my opponent has a wacky punching bag for the next couple hours.

You could go a few directions with what you have.

1. Add more boyz (at least 100) to get up to a green tide to footslog across the battlefield.

2. Add trukks to transport your boyz but its highly likely the trukks will explode

3. Add Battlewagons to transport your boyz for a less likely exploding transport system

4. Ignore the boyz and add lots of bikers.

Lootas are good and so are Deffkoptas (as single model units). Dakkajets are decently good but generally get one turn of dakka in before getting shot down. Use Ghazzy as a generic Mega Armored Warboss with a Lucky Stikk. Nobz as a nob squad are rather bad but a PK Nob in each of your Boyz units is is going to be critical to their success.

Regardless if you want to be completive or just playing for fun you want to add Tankbustas to your arsenal if your planning on starting a proppa WAAAAGH! They are the real gem of the Ork army and the solution to so many of the threats to the Ork army. Meganobz are also a solid choice as the MANz missile tactic is a bread and butter Ork strategy (3-5 Meganobz in a trukk, drive at the enemy going up to 24" in one turn, trukk tends to explode, Meganobz charge something next turn if they didn't get shot to death).

I agree with Vankraken. All of his advice is really good. The only thing i would add is:
Get 1 squad of Gretchin. They are so useful in an ork list, and most armies have an extra spot for them.

I have watched my son win and loose with this army, win more often by overwhelming his enemy. Of note is the fact that he did this without the lootas (I bought those for him but he hasn't played since I got them). Though I have considered this as an option to bolster one of my existing forces. However, I am more of a modeler. Still want to pose as much of a threat as possible when I play.

Don't sell them. Orks will get redone some day and may become more copetative, and they are good for the hobby aspect of 40k. They allow you to practice conversions and paint schemes and if you mess up who cares, more F'd up it is the more orky
