For the copyright blocked, there was a massive rollover lottery win a few weeks ago, with the top £66 million prize being split between two tickets. While the first winner claimed almost immediately, the other ticket has not been claimed.
For Americans, £33 million is a large amount of money, worth about $50 million. Under UK lottery rules, you receive the whole prize immediately with no income tax. You also get a lot of free counselling and advice from Camelot, who run the lottery.
Camelot announced it was bought in the Worcester area, though not exactly which shop, although they know that, of course. There are now hundreds of people claiming it was lost or washed in their jeans pocket, and so on.
It is surprising how many large prizes go unclaimed. Obviously people who lost their ticket, or forgot they bought one, or perhaps never checked their numbers.
I buy my lottery tickets online, so there is no physical ticket to lose and I get alerted automatically when I win something. The nightmare of thinking you had won a big prize and thrown away your ticket would be unbearable.

Yeah, me too. But then you get scallies like those people the other week, who tried to claim something like a £35m Euromillions jackpot on the basis that they had tried to buy a ticket with the winning numbers (which Camelot did verify was true) but hadn't realised the purchase didn't actually go through because they didn't have enough credit on their account. I'd love to have seen the response on that one.

...but equally, if he had bought those numbers that day, then they may not have come up. Due to the butterfly effect, chaos theory etc the very act of buying the numbers, may have changed the outcome of the draw.

What would you rather see happen- lose a pound, or see the fates taunt you like that?

Had it happen myself. Was watching the numbers on the tv and saw all my chosen numbers pop up once. But every number combination will hit at some point. It's the nature of "random".

Someone has submitted a valid claim, reports the BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35432234
For the copyright blocked, lottery operator Camelot say a valid ticket has been submitted, meaning that none of the claims made for supposedly lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed tickets had been validated.
The winner has chosen to remain anonymous.

...eventually.
Powerball has 175.2 million combinations.
At 2 draws per week, 52 weeks a year, that's only 1,684,615 years and 5 months until your number comes up!
Assuming no repeats.
