I'm going back and forth with this and was wondering if anyone has any advice.

I want to paint Tyranid carapaces with the red feathering, and wanted a very dark red hue on the carapace as a base.

Is it better to paint the carapace black (Abbadon Black) and then use a red shade (Crimson Whateveritscalled), or is it better to paint the carapace red (Khorne or Mephiston Red) and use a dark shade like Nuln Oil to build up the shading?

Definitely red with a black wash. Other way round won't really work, a red wash over black is just going to give you a very slightly tinted black, not enough to actually notice.

If you want a really dark red, try mixing in a small amount of black with your red of choice, to get a nice dark basecoat that can then be both highlighted up and shaded down.

If you have an airbrush, go red over black.

Prime black, zenithal a red, mask and edge with a brighter red or go to brush.

Given red can't cover black, it produces a pretty nice effect.
