Who is better to use in a competitve game? Yarrick or Straken?

Just from looking at the codex (no play testing yet) my vote is for Straken. Furious Charging/Fearless combined infantry squad with a decent close combat character seems worth it to me. Mix in a psyker, priest and power weapon sgts and this unit could be awesome.

There is a slight issue with having just Straken, he can only be placed into a CCS, as he isn't an Independent Character when I look at the current army codex for AM. But if you really do want a beatstick for AM, Yarrick is always a blast, especially for blob squads, as he's an independent character! Also he can still issue orders I believe, and he's actually quite tough too, and he weilds a bloody POWER KLAW, that's pretty awesome

Yarikk is definitely more survivable and cheaper.

Yarrik. Cheaper, commissar benefits, more survivable, independent character, doesn't boost your hth which you're terribad at w/o allies anyway.

It looks like I was off on this idea lol. As far as Yarrick, can he be your warlord? I have seen different opinions because of his rule about if a senior officer is in your army then a lord commissar cannot be the warlord.

Commissar Lords can't be Warlord unless no one has the rule Senior Officer which Yarrick has. Thus, he is the exeption.

Yeah, the senior officer rule and the Yarrick entry are not written very clearly.

Basically, when I use my IG, if I have a company commander in my list along with Yarrick then I make the company commander my warlord. If Yarrick is alone in my list without a company commander, then I make Yarrick my warlord.

This follows the IG's fluff since commissars are morale officers first and foremost. Commissars generally are not going to be issuing orders and they are not going to be in charge if an officer or sergeant is around (unless they shoot the officer or NCO). The Gaunt's Ghosts books do a great job of emphasizing that Gaunt, a commissar who is also an officer, is the exception rather than the norm.

My opponents have always been cool with this. I've brought Yarrick as my warlord (and I didn't bring any other HQ units like company command squads) to over a half dozen tournaments and no opponent has had a problem with Yarrick being my warlord. However, the senior officer rule and Yarrick's entry in the codex are so vaguely written, I bet most opponents would be perfectly OK with your declaring Yarrick your warlord even if you have a CCS in your list.

Straken is in my normal IG army. He's incredibly expensive and so i slap him in a chimera.

Yarrick can join untis and give ordrs so this is very cool. He doesnt do as much FOR his army as Straken does in the ROLE that i need so I choose Straken but I'd be hard pressed to tell anyone that Straken is "better". He's just better for an assault based blob army. =)

Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and then crush him.
