Which do you prefer, Dakka? The Kytan Daemon Engine, or a Lord of Skulls? I want to pick up one of them, but don't really know too much about how they actually function in games.

The Kytan - far cheaper and better stats for melee.

How is this even a question? the Kytan is a good superheavy, the Lord of Skulls is perhaps the single worst one.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The Lord Of Skulls is a lot shootier, and is also tougher. However, Stomp is an incredibly powerful rule, and not having it is a big, big deal for a melee superheavy. It's arguably going to do more damage than your actual close combat weapon, unless you're specifically and only engaging other superheavies. Thunderblitz, by comparison, isn't great because you do end up crippling your ability to shoot - which is contrary to having paid extra for the heavy firepower (you get an extra four krak missile analogue shots out of the Hades Gatling compared to the Kytan's 'snub' version, plus your one-use Daemonforge rerolls).

A Lord Of Skulls isn't exactly easy to pin down in a melee - it's still got a fragging hellstorm template flamer, after all - but it can be done, and far more easily than for a Knight, Sword-armed Wraithknight or Scythed Hierodule, all of which are a damn sight cheaper.

The Kytan is more killable, but it's also faster - fleet and crusader means you should reliably be getting 5" run moves and reroll your charge distance - and the safest place for the unit to be during the enemy's shooting phase is locked in combat with one of his units.

Finally, the higher WS means that the Kytan actually hits harder in combat, and (critically) its higher I means it ususally strikes first. Two to three destroyer hits are liable to smash a dreadnought to pieces before it can raise its weapon, rather than return damage afterwards.

I prefer the Lord of Skulls. Yeah it's crazy points but more HPs and can get tons of attacks if it takes damage. The shooting hellstorm and dinner plate templates will get rid of many pesky units that would otherwise tarpit you in combat for lack of stomp. Also you can thunder blitz non vehicle units and shoot normally. Only when ramming do you suffer the snap shot thing. that means the Lord of Skulls can deal with two to three units per turn instead of basically one that the Kytan can. The Kytan can only charge a different unit IF its gun destroys the unit it shoots, which is not guaranteed (especially at BS3). So I recommend getting a Lord of Skulls and magnetize get the torso and getting some Knight lower parts to make optional Kytan for lower point games.

Lord of Skulls is absurdly expensive. It's a good unit but far too expensive in points to make it worthwhile. The Kytans is better because it does not have that problem.

The difference between the Kytan and the Lord is that the Kytan is the opposite of absolute gak.

This is a good opinion. I feel like too much emphasis is placed on stomp, and not enough on the stupid shooting of the Lord of Skulls.
Also, the Lord of Skulls has such a crazy-awesome model that you have to get it.

Fear is the mind-killer. The little death that leads to total obliteration.

The points of the lord of skulls is its main killer, lower points and I would love love love to run it all day long punishing the loyalists. Unfortunantly it was made with apoc in mind and not normal games.

I would sign this contract but I already ate the potato

Someone mentioned that the Lord is more durable. It really isn't when you're paying more than 300 points.

Also a lot of emphasis IS placed on Stomp because Stomp helps stop the Kytan from being tarpitted for too long. The Lord doesn't have crazy shooting to make up for that at all.
