Hello Dakka Dakka, so I have recently been down to my local gamesworkshop store (not been down or playing in over 6 months).

I have always wanted to own a Warhammer 30k army to play with, as the era looked really cool and so did the models.

I noticed they have a new Horus Heresy set out The Battle of Calth, I have a few questions regarding beginning and starting 30k and the requirements/recommendations, that I hope can be answered.

My plan was to purchase The battle of Calth set to give me a starter as judging from the contents it seems to be exceedingly good value, from here how exactly do I pick an army or race as it were in 40k?.

What requirements/books do I need to play 30k and for the armies?

And what would you recommend as "must buy" or recommended buy's/purchases for 30k.

And finally any tips or information you have on playing 30k/collecting 30k.

Thank you.

B@C is a great place to start off, 2 boxes and some vehicles will give you a good army.

As far as army selection you have the Loyalist Legions, Traitor Legions, Mechanicum, and Solar Auxilia, and as of recent, Black Shields and Shattered Legions. I would recommend looking through the fluff and seeing which faction appeals to you best. Check out special rules, characters, unique units, etc.

As far as books. If you want to use a 30k army in 40k you'll need the BRB for 40k, and the 2 FW red books (I think one is getting an update). As for 30k, it really depends on your faction.

In 30k, everything is pretty balanced. Use whatever appeals to you, you can make an all infantry list or an all vehicle list(Including Hq's, Troops, the works)

So you'll want to pick your faction, buy the books accordingly, buy 1 or 2 B@C boxes, whatever units/vehicles you think look cool or want to use, and then enjoy 30k!

Welcome to the hobby

Must buys all depend on your play style during the Heresy, or what ever you think looks cool.

My tip for playing a collecting would be to look over the various Legions and decide which of them suits what you want to do best, which has the colors you like best? The Models you like best? Things like that.

1d4chan actually has a pretty good page explaining the different Legions and units.

I Echo others: Look through the fluff of the 18 legions, that should really be your first step. From there you will Eventually need to buy the 2 marine red books from Forge World, these will give you the army list, and the legion special stuff. Beyond that, with Calth you will be tempted to go with a Pride of the legion force, and while this CAN work, I wouldn't recomend it. Save up a bit, go 2 Calth boxes (once you choose your legion) and build up 2 full regular tactical squads from the 60 marines in the 2 boxes, THEN worry about things like vet. squads, and special squads.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Another echo for choosing a legion based on fluff that you like, but I'll also throw in that choosing one based off the colour scheme has some merit- Example- I love the 1000 sons fluff, but can't find a metallic red to my taste. In light of this, I found a sea-green that I like so I'm gonna be painting Sons of Horus. Most fluff behind the leigons can be found on lexicanum or 1d4chan (if you can stand the...colourful...language used)

From what I've been told (pretty recent to the Heresy myself), foot slogging infantry is just as viable as mechanised or other army play styles. Just choose what you like and throw it on the table!

LET THE GALAXY BURN!

This is where I'd put my signature...If I had one!

So I have had a look at some of the information on the legion's and the rules for specific legions.

In terms of 40k, I play mostly shooting based armies (sm,eldar).

So having read the fluff of World Eaters, I really like the idea of the sound of a ravaging army, destroying the enemy in assault.

I also like the colour scheme of white/blue.

Is there anything specific I need to know for this particular legion?

Can I also use all the contents of the Calth boxset for world eaters also?

Thank you.

yup you can! It would probably look something like:

1 Praetor in cataphractii
1 chaplain (I would say console, but chaplain would be good in a CC list)
2 15-man tactical squads with extra CCWs
5-man terminator squads
1 kheres/fist contemptor

Mind you, this is with no proxies.

I plan to use the army against other 30k players and also within my 40k gaming group.

With world bearers being melee focused, do they struggle at all against the shooting aspects of 30k/40k?, or can they be very competitive and hold their own?.

I think they are competitive but I would highly recommend brining in a couple of support (tac/hev) or a couple rapier batteries

World Eaters work best up close, so land raiders are worth the points here, Spartans as well although they do eat a HS slot. Basically assault vehicles and tactical squads with extra CCWs, maybe some Apothecarys too. And red butchers are a nasty choice once they get close.

2000pts IG. ( based on fallout US Army)

3000pts XIIth Legiones Astartes 8th Assault Company. (Pre heresy)
