Pretty soon I will have a fully painted 1850 pts chaos marines army, so I was thinking about picking up 500 pts or so of another army just to try them out. both eldar and dark eldar have caught my interest, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend either one over the other based on how good they are right now, and how fun they are.

Thanks.

DE have the better model line, Eldar are WAY better power wise. You could do a Corsair army from IA11 and have a bit of both.

Dark Eldar if you want to look cool, Eldar if you want everyone to hate you.

Honestly though I'd go with Dark Eldar because I feel like it would actually give you a challenge more of the time.

I'm going from CSMs to DE as a second army, so I'm a bit biased. Personally I think the DE model line is just fantastic. They're supposed to be a tough army to master, but I don't play competitively so I'm not too bothered.

If I were you I would go for both. I play Eldar with a small allied force of DE and it is a devastating combination. Although that only thing the DE there is for is for an Archon with a Webway Portal for my wraithguard you could certainly make a list that is more balanced between the two.

Now if you asking which models look better and I had more fun painting I would 100% say DE. I have always thought they were some of the best looking armies when painted well.

Seeing as you have a bunch of CSM, it seems you don't care much about losing. Therefore you would just pick the army that looks nicer, which could be Dark Eldar.

If you want an actual army to win though, Dark Eldar are the wrong choice. The covens supplement is the best way to go about it in that manner.

Use Dark Eldar Models for Eldar.

DE has way cooler and cheaper models but their rules are in the crapper right now compared to their Craftworld Kin. Plus you can get a non-derpy looking Avatar if you buy the bitz from a Cauldron of Blood, which fits a DE-focused force much better than a Craftworld force.

I think some people are being a bit harsh on Eldar models. Some of them are pretty nice*. Although Dark Eldar are nicer overall.

*Some are also terrible.

A lot of the Eldar range is pretty ancient, and the ones that are not are stupid expensive (Dire Avengers, I'm looking at you) What remains in between however are generally cheese too (Jetbikes, Wraithguards/blades and Wraithknight). Only some of the vehicles hold up (the fire prism is absolutely gorgeous) otherwise.
