Whether it’s the iconic, power-armor-encased Space Marines holding the line against unspeakable forces of xenos; the frothing, Daemonic intensity of Chaos, corrupting all they touch; the squabbling, bodged-together Orks, riding roughshod over far-flung colonies; the exotic, long-lived Eldar wielding rare weaponry and rarer insight; the idealistic, mech-piloting forces of the Tau; the undying, endoskeletal hordes of the Necrons, or the starving forces of unnature, like the Tyranids, spitting death and destruction with every spurt of their chitinous cannons, the Warhammer 40,000 setting offers horrifying surprises and stunning sights at every turn – and the comics will explore them all!

Games Workshop's "Warhammer 40,000" will once again make the leap from gaming to comics in a new series from Titan Comics, based in the popular game's wide-ranging fantasy world.

The announcement was made today during publisher's presentation at the ComicPRO event in Portland, Oregon. The series is slated to debut in September, with a creative team to be revealed at a future date.

In a release, Titan promises fans that the series will take advantage of "Warhammer 40,000's" "wealth of compelling characters, species, and searingly-memorable imagery to deliver accessible science-fiction action on an unmatched galactic canvas."

Titan Comic's press release:
Beginning this September, Titan Comics is thrilled to announce it will be working with Games Workshop® to publish brand-new comics based in the world of Warhammer 40,000™.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war! First brought to life as an epoch-definingly popular tabletop miniature wargame in 1987, Warhammer 40,000's dark-gothic dystopian science-fiction universe pits an outnumbered human Imperium and its sometimes-allies against the eternal forces of Chaos, in a battle for control of the forty-first millennium.

The Games Workshop brand boasts an annual revenue of over $170 million, with 3,700 independent retailers carrying Games Workshop products in 52 countries.

Now in its seventh edition of the tabletop game, Warhammer 40,000 continues to grow from strength to strength, gathering fans across the world to its banner, under the aegis of the game, across hundreds of popular novels, in board games and RPGs from Fantasy Flight, and in fan-favorite videogames like the Dawn of War series. Numerous top-selling apps featuring the Warhammer 40,000 IP are also available for iOS and Android.

Aimed at fans and newcomers alike, Titan's new series taps into Warhammer 40,000's wealth of compelling characters, species, and searingly-memorable imagery to deliver accessible science-fiction action on an unmatched galactic canvas.

Whether it's the iconic, power-armor-encased Space Marines holding the line against unspeakable forces of xenos; the frothing, Daemonic intensity of Chaos, corrupting all they touch; the squabbling, bodged-together Orks, riding roughshod over far-flung colonies; the exotic, long-lived Eldar wielding rare weaponry and rarer insight; the idealistic, mech-piloting forces of the Tau; the undying, endoskeletal hordes of the Necrons, or the starving forces of unnature, like the Tyranids, spitting death and destruction with every spurt of their chitinous cannons, the Warhammer 40,000 setting offers horrifying surprises and stunning sights at every turn – and the comics will explore them all!

Announced at ComicsPRO retailer summit in Portland, Oregon, the Games Workshop partnership will see the publication of brand-new, original comic stories produced by Titan Comics, who add Warhammer 40,000 to their expanding catalogue of wildly-successful licensed comics based on gaming properties including Assassin's Creed, Deus Ex, and Dark Souls.

Look for more announcements of the creative team behind the first ongoing very shortly!

Sounds cool.

I'm down with more 40k comics. The ones from BOOM! were fun. Dan Abnett has a history doing comic books, I hope they have him on for some of these.

That's pretty good news. 40k lends itself well to comics - stylized visuals, lots of action, not super in-depth plot. I know I'd rather read a 40k comic than a 40k novel, though there are some outliers.

I hope they have some Dark Eldar stories! The Dark Eldar trilogy of novels remain some of my favorite 40k fiction.

Something from the perspective of the Tyranid hive mind would be interesting too. I am definitely looking forward to checking these out.

I'm all for this, but I know nothing about Titan. Are they of...quality, so to speak?

If they can get Dan Abnett to follow up on whatever happened to Hekate, the 'Dictatio, and the rest of the crew (and get Anthony Williams to draw it) I would be very happy.

(I guess the further adventures of Malus Darkblade are even more out of the question, for lots of reasons, including the the fact that it'd be difficult to shoehorn him into 40K. Although I remember when they did that before...)

Can't speak for their own comics, but Titan are a well established publisher with AFAIK a good reputation, particularly for collected editions of other comics and strips, and nerdy books in general.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

I guess that helps. I'd like specifics though.

Still, the name dropping of Necrons has me hooked regardless.

Titan are both a publisher of monthly comics, but had a start as a collector of Graphic Novels. For a long time they where the publishers of the 2000AD related collections until Rebellion took over.

They used to be the importer of Marvel and DC collections in the UK with an annoying habbit of using a horrible sticker on the back that never came off cleanly.

They are the current licence holders the Doctor Who comics and also publish the likes of European Collections, Skydoll, Snowchaser and that sort of thing.

Have been decent publishers for a long time and do have a history with licenced properties. They use decent authors for that. Robbie Morrison has written some of the Doctor Who stuff (Wrote Nikolai Dante and Shimura for 2000AD) as an example.

Garth Ennis appears to have one of his history comics being published by them (you know, Preacher, his excellent run on The Punisher, the under-rated Hitman and so on).

I loved both of those, and while I doubt he'd be writing 40k, I'd be stoked if Garth Ennis was writing 40k comics.

Having read some of his Military Comics I think he would be a good one for an Imperial Guard comic.

To be honest it would be nice to see if they could get the rights to reprint some of the earlier Black Library stuff that is no longer in print like Deamonifugue or even Deff Squadron.

My dream would be for them to start an adaptation of the Horus Heresy. One massive undertaking though.

Titan Comics has revealed covers and details for its upcoming Warhammer 40,000 comic series, which is scheduled to launch on October 12. The series, based on the universe of the longrunning miniatures game was announced at ComicsPRO (see “'Warhammer 40,000' Comes to Comics”).
The series will be written by George Mann (Dark Souls, Warhammer Black Library), who has been involved in shaping the Warhammer 40,000 universe for more than a decade though games and novels. Art will be provided by Tazio Bettin (Independence Day) and Enrica Eren Angiolini. Issue #1 will include covers from Tazio Bettin & Enrica Eren Angiolini, John McCrea & Dee Cunniffe, Fabio Listrani, Boo Cook, and Nick Percival, as well as a blank sketch cover.

The first story arc, called Will of Iron, will follow Baltus, a newly elevated Dark Angel Space Marine as he is baptized in battle and learns the price his Chapter has paid for victory. Secrets as old as the ancient Horus Heresy may be revealed.

ICv2 asked Warhammer 40,000 series editor Andrew James if the comic draws from the storylines of the Warhammer 40,000 miniatures game.
“Of course,” he said. “The trick and the challenge, as always, is to make sure that the lore that's in the comic is there in service to the characters and the story, rather than just heaped in by the ton because we have access to it.

“For long-term fans of the games, novels, and universe, there'll be plenty of tantalizing hints and A-list cameos, but for those comics readers who are just looking for an engaging new science fiction comic, we pride ourselves on making it completely accessible. All you need to join the story is in the #1.

“We view much of the story through the eyes of Baltus, a squad-level Space Marine. There's no such thing as an 'ordinary' Space Marine – even the lowest ranks are capable of astonishing superhuman feats – but Baltus knows little of the wider universe, or of the secrets of his chapter, the Dark Angels. He's trained – and made – to obey orders, to do what must be done. But as he witnesses inhuman horrors and experiences deeply personal revelations, and grows as a result, the readers will be right there with him.

“The Warhammer 40,000 universe is vast, intricate, and packed with amazing characters, planets, species, weapons, battles, and historical events. But those are all the backdrop to this story being told through the eyes of a Space Marine, an Interrogator Chaplain, and an Inquisitor.

“We plan to tap as much of the amazing lore as we can, of course, but with the luxury of an ongoing series, we have the time to explore all the facets of Warhammer 40,000 to the full. And with the Calaphrax Cluster, the immense region of space in which our series takes place, we have the benefit of an entirely new and unexplored sector of the universe in which to play.

“The Calaphrax Cluster has been closed off to the wider universe by warp storms since the days of the Horus Heresy, ten thousand years prior. Who knows what treasures, mysteries, and ancient technologies the region holds? Fans can read the series to find out!”

Warhammer 40,000 has been a perennial resident of the ICv2’s Top Miniatures Games lists over the years, typically at #1 (although it fell to #2 in the most recent period, deposed by the force of Star Wars (see “Top Miniatures Games – Fall 2015”). The Warhammer 40,000 miniatures game is currently in its 7th Edition (see “Sales of '40k 7th Edition' Beating '6th'”). The property was last used for new comics in the mid-00s, by BOOM! Studios (see "BOOM! GW Line Expands").

The property has also been developed in video games, with the newest iteration, Dawn of War III, planned for release in 2017 (see “ICv2: Digital Side of Tabletop Games Grows”).

Check ICv2 tomorrow for an exclusive preview of the story in the first issue.
