So a year after AoS has been released and I'm wondering what most WFB are actually playing. I'm starting to dabble with WFB again but it seems like there's no one set of rules the community has switched to. The one thing that I think is happening, is that they didn't switch to AoS. I'd actually be curious to know if AoS has a larger following by successfully roping in more 40k players or if it's dying on the vine. They keep releasing horrible models for it (burning dwarves?) so I imagine it's selling well enough for GW to not freak out and re-do it.

So if I walked into the average LGS in the U.S., what would I find WFB players playing?

Age of Sigmar
WFB 8th ed.
WFB 7th ed.
Kings of War
9th Age

Something else?

I stopped playing Warhammer when 8th came out as it was supremely bad, worse than 4th edition.

Kings of War since 2012 for deep tactical wargaming and Age of Sigmar since the midnight release party when it came out for beer & pretzels wargaming.

Coming from southwest Virginia, WHFB was rare to nonexistent for at least 5-6 years. Its made something of a comeback. At my FLGS its been mostly Age of Sigmar with about 5-6 players and a game or two a week. I also know of at least 2 others playing Kings of War though they seem to play mostly at another store one town over so there may be more of a following for KoW there.

where ya at in VA? In Richmond there's a bunch of us that play KoW and a big league is starting next week. There's also a lot of AoS players - I have Stormcast and Nurgle, personally.

Orkimedes - That's my issue with 9th Age, though - veterans adopt it, but I think the barrier to adoption for new players is somewhat high. Locally, we've seen a lot of folks who weren't previously playing fantasy jump in on Kings of War.

I think there is room for both but that's why I've chosen the KoW route, at least! I am hoping it has some legs since it will still be supported by a company making new releases, books, etc. And also has a simple yet tactical gameplay appeal which I had been looking for!

Nothing stops you from using cheap KoW minis for your 9th age games.

Any newcomer will play whatever his group is playing. In our group it's mostly 9th age, so whatever teenagers start lurking on the fantasy miniatures section of the FLGS ends up playing 9th age, just because that's what most people play.

Where do you play, Judge? Buddy of mine in Richmond is just starting to build up some KoW, might be game for a grow league.

Usually Dragon's Den (mainly for Bolt Action). The KoW league that's starting up is going to be game store agnostic though so I have a feeling games will be played at Battlegrounds and Dragon's Den equally (not One Eyed Jacques though as they've gotten rid of their gaming tables), plus people's houses (I have an 8x4 I'll play on occasionally). Tell your buddy to join the KoW RVA group, the demo day is this Saturday and the league starts the following week - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1528613377429372/

We're still using 8th because everybody has a copy of it. Not that we play much anymore...

Alles klar, eh, Kommissar?

Our scene died with the old world but recently a group of us undertook an endeavor to revive WHF. We settled on 7th edition with a small errata basically stealing a few bits from other editions namely 8th to fix the few bad parts of 7th. Its done wonders for rekindling interest. Heres a link, if you skip to page 3 last post you'll find where we are at:

Technically I guess still playing 8th edition, I say technically as I've never played 9th or AoS and last game of KoW was about two years ago.

AoS has more or less killed fantasy for me, just because I get very few games anyway and so far none of them outside the Rushed Rumble event have been fantasy.

Pity in some ways, this means my High Elves have in effect been stillborn, I have the models I want and I will get round to finishing them one day, my Skaven are 'ok' but will never get all the models they could do with. Just use limited time to play other things.

Its far from all bad though, previous club had a similar thing, fantasy is in effect dead, but this has pushed players who once would play WHFB and 40k, and near at anything else into trying a huge range of games.

Kings of War, Malifaux, Bolt Action, Flames of War, Gates of Antares, Very British Civil War, Black Powder and many others.

I was really hoping AoS would be a revival for WHFB, I even went so far as to buy the starter (since sold). I know there was a lot of interest from our weekly club in a good revamp. Sadly the game was no good and even the hardcore group of 6-8 regular fantasy guys has pretty much vanished, you maybe see one game of old fantasy getting played a month if that.

I've always loved the fantasy setting and the Old World, Lizardmen were what started me on the path to 40k and wargaming in general, but either lack of other players, or laterally the high entry cost for basic units meant that I was never able to start playing. Sadly, and despite the fact that AoS has got some really nice new models, I have no desire to play it whatsoever anymore.

My friend was the biggest gw appologist ever but aos broke him, he has all the end times books in hard back and as he read them he got more and more disheartened.

He no longer plays gw games and has stopped all buying, he can't even bring himself to paint stuff he already owns.

That's the kind of damage aos did.
