can I run them in a normal tau empire army, or will I need to repaint my army to be farsight red if I want to use them?

I'd like to know before I bother even thinking of getting mont'ka

Paint NEVER has any impact on gameplay. Under no condition will you be forced to paint something a certain way to get a benefit.

I realize this. The point I was trying to make was if I need to be playing farsight enclave to run the Mont'ka formations.

None of the formations in Montka except the eight are FSE specific. Some of them are excellent.

The detachment is FSE specific but that doesn't mean you need to be painted any particular colour.

No
Example
Orks "Red paint job" upgrade makes you move 1" more
Nowhere does it state that the vehicle HAS to be painted red
same apllies to everything else

Unless it's lead paint on a die.

Basically unless you are running a dawn contingent, you can run any formation as any enclave or empire. Although its ambiguous amongst players whether or not Dawn Contingent can be TE or FSE. I say either one based on the wording.

But point being, no paint scheme change. My whole army is Tau Light Ochre TE colors and I am going to beging FSE lists shortly. This can be explained fluff wise since they will work together against a common enemy, such as in the Montka book.

The Dawn Blade looks to be FSE only. Everything else could be TE or FSE depending on your preference.

You only might want to wield the paintbrush if you are running multiple contingents and it could be genuinely confusing for your opponent if everything looks the same.

Except for the ork red paint rule.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Running loyalist tau with crisis troops using the Farsight rules isn't exactly rare.

You do not need to run an FSE army to run the formations in Mont'Ka, I'm pretty sure you can even run the Eight as Tau Empire.

You do not need to paint your Tau red to run them as an FSE army.

You do not need to play an FSE army if your Tau are painted red.

You may, very rarely, hear grumbling if you play your clearly painted Ultramarines as Iron Hands. In such situations you must fight for your right to party.

I'll have to look, but I do believe the 8 are FSE only, and I'm of the opinion, mind you I just said opinion as I'm not a rules lawyer, that the DBC can only be run as FSE from the way I read the wording.

Edit: Never mind, the Eight aren't FSE only, but the formation can't be changed and the equipment is set in stone, so it doesn't mater. I still believe the DBC has to be run as FSE though.

Yeah, but that's a contingent, not a formation.
