I'm about to invest in Orks for the first time (new beginner box). Does the codex include detachments and formations like the more recent stream of codices - Necrons, Marines, etc... Is this supplement designed to add those to the existing codex, or is it likely that they'll release a new codex in the coming weeks? Just looking to figure out how many books to budget for...
Thanks,
-Bill

codex doesn't include (many) formations, most are in the new Ghazgul book

Almost no armies include all of the formations in their codex, many are in white dwarfs, supplements, campaign books etc etc. If you google 40k formations you can find lists for all of the them and where to find them for the ones you need. Obviously don't bother with formations that don't interest you etc.

For the ork codex I believe just the codex and the new waaggh book coming out in a few days now should contain every relevant formation. Don't buy the old waaagh suppliment, the new one will have a couple formations the old one did not have.

Forget Ghaz. you don't need those formations.

Codex + The looted wagon white dwarf is what you need.

This place is kinda vandalised but it should still point you to all of the ork sources

Most of the formations are not in the codex and are in Waaagh! Ghazghkull with a few others scattered in the supplements that were released with the Space Wolves campaign. I would suggest that if you are starting out that you stick to the codex and the white dwarf data sheet for looted wagons. Our formations are very restrictive and generally very bad, for instance the new Ghazghkull supplement formations that are coming out in a week actually make your army weaker unless you play games of around 2000 points and include Ghazghkull himself with a whole host of weak units. Many of the formations are very restrictive as to which units you can bring and most of them require multiple expensive models, which can be difficult for a new player. If you are new to orks, stick to the combined arms detachment (and maybe the getting started box set formation if it turns out to be good).

Say what you will about that site's sense of humour, but they have a spot on tactics section.

Still waiting for Godot.

I wrote a large part of the ork stuff but it gets vandalized real quick. Got tired of updating / repairing it.
If you are all hyped about the woooo we can waaagh all turns with the Ghaz supplement. Take a look at page 88 of the ork codex. That formation is basicly the "new" Ghaz stuff without any of nerfs.

I lavish you with praise for teaching me enough to hold my own. My first win after getting back into the hobby was won by spending a night reading through that article multiple times.

Also download battle scribe it saves you a lot of time puzzling all the stuff together. Just watch out for the FW stuff since some of the rules "in use" are currently in out of print books.

nvm. I just looked at the current state and almost noting I wrote is left there. lol. The current version even glorifies the big squiggoth :\

In all seriousness, i've added a bit there too. But mostly some updates and alternative takes ;D

Updates and alternative takes are allright. Those things are one of the cool things about that site. But removing point cost issues of the big squiggoth etc is bad. Sure you might love units, but new players need to read the real story including all the alternative takes and not just the positive one.
