IA:13 has rules for all chaos gods markings, and equipment and tanks.
Vraks is limited to Khorn and Nurgle, includes 2 sweet detachments (which
IA:13 can use) and has some different Demagogues, like Ordnance Tyrant. Think of
IA:13 as the main codex, and Vraks as the expansion book. Owning both helps, as
FW dropped the ball and failed to flesh out the appendix properly. In vraks, the renegade helhound has an 18" torrent range. In
IA:13, it doesn't ever list it's profile, so.. yeah, fun stuff.
I started R&H about 6 months ago. I wanted more conversions, more crazy happenings, and more stuff on the table. R&H can field 90% of what
AM can field, and then they can field a whole slew of their own stuff. The golden rule to know about R&H is that everything is dirty cheap compared to
AM, because it is crappier. All our stuff is -1WS/
BS, but for a cost, you can make it
WS/BS3. Sometimes (like wyverns, or hellhounds) there isn't a point, so we just get them cheaper. Other times, (infantry) your upgrade is static cost, and the more you bring, the less PPM you pay. HOWEVER, if you play R&H, and try to make them into
AM, your going to fail and lose games.
R&H infantry are dirty nasty cheap, can be pseudo fearless, can have grenades, special weapons and heavy weapons and chaos marks. They are awesome. You can easily fit 200 infantry into a game and have only spent around 800pt. My artillery spam lists have 200 dudes between the artillery crew and the zombies!
Every single
AM model has an RH counterpart, RH even have Scions, though they are called Grenadiers. They get hotshot lasguns, the volleygun, can get special weapons, deep strike, the works! They are also, you guessed it, dirt cheap. Like
AM, we have upgrades for our warlord, like ordnance tyrant, bloody handed reaver, master of the horde and whatnot. Those unlock special units, upgrades, and lords of war. Your warlord can also take a chaos mark, which unlock even more units. For example, in
IA:13, a Nurgle warlord can have 1 unit of blight drones, and 1 unit of zombies, but in Vraks, its 1 unit blight drones, and unlocks zombies as troops!
R&H has been the most enjoyable army I have played in a very long time. One of the big reasons is that when I am building a list, its hard for me to fill the list up. Where as with daemons or space wolves. I always have trouble fitting everything I want in the list. Renegades are so cheap, its easy to bring everything, and have room for allies!
Random leadership: So when you have to take your first leadership test, its
D6+4. There are ways to re-roll, or do
2D6 choose the highest. This is also good, because when someone says decides to cast psychic shriek, they don't know the leadership of your unit until after the spell goes off! Yes, your leadership might be 6, but it might also be 10!
Ogryns are terrible - They are RH's terrible unit, don't even try, they are just bad. Look at chaos ogryns, then look at chaos spawn, there is a clear winner. Hell, even beasts of nurgle are better in every possible way.
RH have a lot of access to
FW stuff though, specifically artillery, and that artillery is freaking amazing, so kitbash/proxy.
I highly suggest trying it out.
IG is for chumps RH is for winners. Plus, chaos gets all the cool toys!
Oh, with Vraks second edition "The Purge" detachment and an Ordnance Tyrant, you can bring an army that, aside from your command squad, is 100% artillery, as your troops, elites, and heavy support can all be artillery. (no fast attack in that detachment) Plus all the barrage blasts leave dangerous terrain markers, its super fluffy and fun!
