Has anyone else noticed this worrying trend?

Wolves that gain +1A as long as there are 20+ models in the unit.
Units that can pile in and attack after they die.
Formations that have no optional units.
And now Genestealer cult units that may not increase their size.

All rules that were in AoS before 40k.

They are fine rules, but will it be long before GW gets rid of the points in 40k altogether?

If they do that, I'm done and I'll be glad that I never bought more than one list.

40k isn't becoming AoS. Can we please stop bringing this up?

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

For a moment I was scared. Then I realized that GW is incapable of this level of planning. They don't give two cents for our sense of the game, and they'd just pull the rug out without hinting at it through small things first.

The "unit" being multiple units of Wolves able to be joined into one unit.

Units that can pile in and attack after they die.

So?

Formations that have no optional units.

By and large, few formations have "optional units". You see the optional units primarily in places where there is an option such as the Battle Demi-Company allowing Devastators OR Centurion and Assault Squads OR Bikes.

And now Genestealer cult units that may not increase their size.

Because the formations are strictly for you to use the contents of the Deathwatch: Overkill box in 40k

All rules that were in AoS before 40k.

Have you actually played AoS and read the rules for formations there, or are you just going off what you've seen posted online?

I dunno. AoS is purty fun...

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Those rules all existed in in precedent in 40k prior to AoS even being a glimmer of someone's mind. So, by your logic, AoS gameplay was stolen from 40k.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

It's sort of the other way around. Those style of rules writing actually predate AoS (quite literally actually).

The old Mob Rule was dependent on the number of models in the unit to gain a benefit. Specifically, going over 10 models granted you Fearless (which was why Orks were awesome back then, instead of being wimpier than Guard now).

Tyranids' Catalyst Psychic Power granted the ability to strike even if killed in combat before their initiative step. This was from at least 3rd edition.

The first Formations, for Apocalypse, not only didn't have any optional units, but also had extra points you had to pay on top of the units. It wasn't until 7th edition, when Formations could become standalone armies, that they really started having optional units (there were a few formations before that had optional units, but they weren't as many as they are now).

A lot of units already have set limits. The most notable throughout the ages is Long Fangs.

Basically, you got the situation backwards; AoS has been teefing 40k rules, which is no real surprise since GW is not exactly very original. Hell the entire Champion of Chaos rule was basically lifted from the Warriors of Chaos Fantasy Armybook and into Chaos Space Marines.

Don't worry. Even if 40k goes AoS, we can still always play 30k!

Jervis has said recently he hates points because then it makes the game for tournaments, and GW has been actively attacking tournaments and competitive players over the last 8 years. They even claim that tournament players are only 20% of their sales.

Plus GW is all in on the train wreck that is AoS, so much so they are willing to nuke 40k to do it.

GW doesn't know what it sells or who it is selling to and hasn't for quite awhile, they just raise prices to offset their arrogant stupidity. Everything they are doing right now is trying to dumb the game down to broaden appeal while leaving the prices at the staggeringly high and alienating level of 4 times the actual cost it many cases.

And now we have fluff advancement that is looking like the gak show that was the end times scam.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Enjoy it while you can because come June they'll need some big seller to fudge the financial report and the only move they have is releasing a new edition.

And this may is the 2 year mark for 7th, as 6th only lasted 23 months before it was recalled... I mean redone.

Of course they'd attack tournaments, they're the primary reason GW had to hire playtesters and, you know, competent rule designers in the past.

Why hire someone specifically to balance the game when you can just write it yourself and duck behind the saving throw of "Forge the Narrative" when you realize you forgot to proofread it.

However they are right in that Tournament players are only 20% of their profits. At least here, it's an increasingly common practice of people ordering a huge amount of miniatures to be professionally painted and assembled, only to back out halfway through when the next codex drops (even if it's not the most broken thing). GW doesn't care though, because the models, paints, glue and brushes are already paid for. Literally people with more money than common sense are their primary demographic.

Don't flatter yourself. They don't "attack" tournaments, they just don't pay them any mind.
