I've been taking photos of all my old Necromunda gangs and noticed quite how badly some of them could use a full strip down and repaint.
My Orlocks especially are in dire need of reimagining but I never had much of an idea of their personality. Does anyone have an cool ideas for a particular style/house match up that would be really cool to see?
I saw a great Borg-style Van Saar gang in the pages of WD once upon a time.
And I love the idea of doing a Yakuza style Delaque gang, with Japanese dragon motifs on their coats.
Anyone got any more bright ideas?

I always figured Orlocks for the quintessential street gang, half Grease, half the Fonz. So leather jackets over plain t-shirts and denim trousers with boots, plus a gang colour on headbands and whatnot.

My Escher were inspired by the hookers in Sin City - they're all in shades of black, grey and white (except the faces; they're not monochrome as such).
Delaque could be done as western desperadoes or trenchcoated goth types; I painted mine as the former and named them after the aliens from Dark City - who dressed like the latter.

Yes I have an Orlock army stripped down ready to be painted and I have struggled with the style I want for them. I would quite like to do something in line with the Montegues and Capulets from the Leonardo Di Caprio Romeo and Juliet - but I think I'll likely just paint them up in blacks and greys with a single spot color on the bandanas instead.
i do find the Orlocks quite boring in comparison with the other gangs - I have a massive set of them largely acquired as the "extras" that came with other miniatures I bought on eBay over the years.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

I would love to see some Hawaiian shirt pink hair and chrome on an Orlocks gang. Not so sure if I'd be the one to pull it off well at all but its a top idea.
I can see the whole 80's street gang thing, leather, plain White tee and jeans, gang colour bandana... Just makes me think of west side story... Or worse, Michael Jackson's 'Bad' video. It was never a look that said "serious gangster" to me. But the minis themselves do dictate what can be done and at the end of the day it's mostly just a colouring excercise. Blacks and greys would really work well, and in all honesty are probably the way I'll go with my own but like you say I'll never find them as interesting as some of the other gangs.

You could also do some head swaps, to add a bit of personality maybe?

That's how I imagined them too.

I'm a big fan of necro figs in more contemporary paint schemes. I think the sculpts are good enough to hold up even today.
It's nothing too radial, but here's a paint scheme my buddy did that adds just a bit of color to the usual Orlock scheme.
It's not tied to a particular IP, but my Escher were painted in a contemporary style by a friend of mine who has a very unique painting perspective.

When you see his other work, the roots of this style are pretty obvious.

Lastly, here's my Van Saar. I wanted a bit more modern look with a nod to the old green look.

I painted an Escher gang as the Mane Six and the Cutiemark Crusaders from My Little Pony.

If these are the ones you want to repaint, perhaps a biker gang paint scheme. It can be a bit bland, but it;s certainly a simple but evocative theme. Here's a biker gang I painted up a while back using mostly EM4 (Grenadier) figures, plus a Warzone (bare-chested dud with huge gun) and Demonblade (flamethrower with shoulder patch) fig . Not my best work, but I think it holds up ok and you get the idea. I think a number of these guys would actually be great Orlock proxies, especially if your gang was made up of the second-generation loincloth-less orlock figures which were pretty much Necromunda-bikers anyway. The ex-Grenadier "Future Warriors" figures currently cast by EM4 are especially nice as their old-school 28mm scale fits just about perfectly with the size of Necromunda figures.
A few GW skull decals on their backs (or sleve depending on the scupt) really ties them together like a good rug.
More pics of the gang and their buggy here:
