Must get round to picking this book up.
.. Always interesting to get a glimpse "behind the curtain".
Have to say that there is some validity to the idea that XX amount of people had/have already decided to hate the setting/game regardless.
Of course -- and Mr Thorpe et al do acknowledge this -- not all the criticism is unjustified or incorrect.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Yeah. I've said that and think that myself; there is a large amount of people that decided to hate the setting and game upon release for many reasons:
* not competitive
* no points = hard for pick up games
* setting they liked is gone
* different type of game
And no matter if Gav and Co write the best story ever, they will still get a ton of hate coming their way for it.

Just read all the comments - great read. I have a lot of respect for Gav (he wrote the Inquisitor game after all!) - people who have read my posts will know me as someone who both likes and criticises AoS. I may post a few thoughts to Gav and see what he thinks.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

Interesting read, though there weren't actually a lot of details in the article itself.
While I certainly didn't have the most positive feelings towards the new setting at the start, I really did try to give it a chance. And ultimately, it's not even that it's bad; it just holds very little interest for me.

I never liked his writing, I vastly prefer Aaron Dembsky Bowden.

Yeah because all top class writers are queuing up to write Games Workshop novels. Do me a favour, it's always been tripe.

As mentioned Dembsky is rather good, as is Abnett. At one point they did have talent.

Fafnir wrote:Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |
