Just curious, what sort of prizes are generally handed out at your local tournaments? What sort of prize, monetary or other, and who all gets a prize? Where does the prize come from?

At our local store we usually pay 10 to 20 dollars for buy ins depending on the size and type of tournament, usually $15 though. As prizes, we give store credit to the winners (so we can give slightly bigger prizes, even though it means you can only spend it on more gaming stuff), and on occasion we'll give out free model kits or various awards, even a trophy on occasion.

We usually give out 7 prizes: 2 for painting, 2 for wins, 2 for sportsmanship, and 1 for best combined score. Painting is done by a panel of 3 or 4 judges that didn't play in the tournament. Wins is based on your victory points total, I don't know exactly how they tally it but the greater the difference between you and your opponent will earn you a higher ranking. Finally is sportsmanship, which is done by having you vote on everyone you played against, ranking them in order of best sportsman. Best overall is obviously just combining all of them.

You can only win 1 prize. Most of the time this won't happen, as the person that does win multiples is best overall and the 3rd place people get bumped up into prize range. Prizes are usually 100-150 for best overall, 50-75 for first places, and 25-40 for second places.

Oh, and for the person that consistently rolls the worst, the Snake Eyes Award, a free brick of dice of your choosing. If no one rolled especially bad this is given to last place.

Well, depends on the size of tourney.
If there are 16 participants or so, then 30 € for the winner, 20 € for the second, and 15 € for the third. There is always a ''best painted'' award receiving a 10% discount voucher.

Based upon the size of the tournament they give out gift cards to the store that hosts for us. Last one first place was something like a $150.

Our local tournaments have a prize for best overall, best general, best painting, best sportsmanship, and a random prize for someone who did not win one of the above. Our entry fees are $10 per person, and the prizes are gift certificates for the FLGS where we play. I have yet to win anything, but thats not why I play.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):

It's funny, I always tell people "yeah, I usually place in our tournaments" when what I really mean is "I suck at 40k but have won a bunch of best sportsman"

I don't really put much attention to it.
Its usually some hobby supplies, store credit or a small box of minis.
I am one of those few players who would rather have a lower entry fee, or free food for all then a major price for the winners. Even if I somehow manage to win a price.

The way the league works is every tournament has a $10 entry fee.

Half the money goes into prizes, the other half goes into the pot.

At the end of the year, the final tournament (you need 3 participations in the year to be eligible to be in the finals, if not your entry fee is higher to compensate for not having contributed to the pot the rest of the year).

Final tournament all the entry fees plus the pot go into prize support.

Prizes are for the usual
Best Overall
Best General
Best Sportsman

Last placer usually gets a new dice cube to break his curse.

There are a few random prizes as well.
