Subject: Return of classic Games Workshop game Skull Crushers-CANCELLED? Pg3
|

As many of you know Dakka has a long tradition of April Fools Gags. Like the time we convinced everyone that GW was going to abandon 25 years of branding and rename the Imperial Guard the... Espacial Soldiares? Something like that.
Or the time we convinced everyone GW was going to abandon 30 years of world building and blow up the Olde Worlde setting to replace it with... what did we come up with? The Age of Karl Franz? Something like that.
And yes, yes, yes, this was in fact an April Fools gag. Thanks to everyone who helped set it up and played along!
I for one feel a twinge of disappointment, in order to create this gag I wrote up rules for SkullCrushers-Violent Action, and now I want to play.
Maybe a kickstarter?
Anyway time to start planning next year's April Fools. Maybe something about GW launching an army of fanatical warrior nuns in power armor.
Another day, another rerelease
From Wired (of all places)
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2016-03/15/GW-skullcrushers
Hey children of the 80s! British games maker GW has been on a hot streak lately updating some of their classic games like Talisman and Battlefleet for mobile platforms, or even bringing back tabletop versions of games like Space Hulk.
Now they've done it again reaching back into the archives for the table top classic Skull Crushers!
This game which pit a group of hulking barbarians against a seemingly endless hoard of skeletons kept us entertained for many Saturday nights is coming back with new models and artwork.
A company press release that came with our preview copy says "Games Workshop is proud to reintroduce Skull Crushers to new generation! The game includes 6 highly detailed heroes and over 30 nasty skeletons for them to crunch! Who will make it to the centre of the crypt and claim the Skull Hammer?"
The rules are dead simple and we were up and running in 15 minutes. It's a pretty normal tile-exploration game. Your heroes start on one tile and each turn at least one tile is added to the board but you can add more by stepping off the edge of the tile you're on. Each tile reveals treasures, tunnels (they work like warp zones), altars (healing and other buffs) and of course more skeletons! The final tile on the deck (with a red back to mark it) has both the legendary Skull Hammer and the fearsome She-Liche you must battle to gain it.
The art work on each tile is fantastic, loaded with tons of in-jokes and sly references to GW games. Squint and you can see a gravestone labeled 'Andrew Chambers-Traitor', a reference to a GW designer who defected to their rivals. Another reads 'Squats-Never to Return' a reference to a beloved faction in GW's science fiction game.
Each hero has different advantages and disadvantages. The Elf Scout for example has the fastest move and can jump over skeletons with his Acrobatics skill. But with his low armor and attacks you might find him surrounded and overwhelmed with none of the heavy fighters in any position to aid him.
On the other extreme the Chaos Warrior has the armour and attacks to smash through dozens of skeletons, but his low move will make him struggle to get anywhere useful.
The Battle Wizard can help with buffs, but will fall quickly in a straight up fight.
In most of our games the Scout quickly opened up several tiles but soon fell to the masses of skeletons which the rest of the party struggled to reach him. The heroes did best when they stuck together and took their time, but in two games that didn't work either when we found them surrounded and overwhelmed because we had not covered enough ground and found enough altars to buff the party for the final encounter.
We found it a fun game with good replay value, especially when the optional 'Sudden Death' rules were used. In that set up a wraith starts following the the party after a few turns and if you're not moving fast enough he starts to pick them off from behind.
The only gripe we have is the models are unpainted while the box shows them fully painted. A bit of a disappointment, but I guess we need to pick up a few pots and give it a go eh?
Much like Lost Patrol I can't say I've heard of this game, and damnit, I've played Oi Dats Me Leg. Anyone remember it?
The only image I could find of the original game was this one. Looks like it was another quick release ala space fleet and ultramarines.
Whatever the case this new/relaunched game is looking pretty good. I can see a lot of CSM lords being made from the new version of Harry the Hammer and the new skellies are amazing esp considering they're one-piece or snap-tight models.
No release date yet.
EDIT: Looks like Wired jumped the gun, they pulled the article down. Did anyone save the images?

Whoa, interesting! Quality looks pretty good to me, but is so retro I wonder if they might just be re-using old molds - maybe some crossover from Hero Quest? I never owned that game so am not sure what might have been "borrowed"... really interesting too since another company used the Hero Quest name as GW had let it expire:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/569616.page
Maybe they're trying to reclaim that niche but with a new title? (Much more in line with their current naming system for better or worse!)

If the price is right it could be worth it just for the skellies
2 or 3 boxes could get you a whole tomb kings army!

Holy crap! I was just trying to remember the name of that game to track down a copy from Ebay.
Cant wait for this. I hope they keep the old imagery and style. Would be much less interested in Bloodbound vs Deathrattle.

I found a better copy of the original box, love that classic art.
Wouldn't it be awesome if they kept that? Maybe a collectors edition or something.

Huh. I'm intrigued, but I'm currently so behind with GW's other board game releases, that it'll be a while before I get to look st this one.
Though if reviews carry on being positive, it may queue jump over the others. Assuming it cones out soon, anyhow.

Another classic makes a rebooted return?
And this is why I love GW so damned much! Missed out on a game back in the day? Here's a new version with up to date minis! Colour me intrigued, my trip down nostalgia road continues ever onwards.
I'm sure that the mention of tiles will be of interest to some posters on these boards.

I played this a lot with my pals at university in the early 80s. It was one of our favourite games along with Car Wars and B17: Queen of the Skies.
But is this a straight reprint or a new, updated edition? The cover art is the original. It won't be a straight reprint beause GW will have lost the cardboard pieces artwork like with Space Hulk. Obviously they can do new artwork for that, but what about the rules? I don't think it needs any changes.

I'm still looking for images of the original game, but I think it came out in the 80s before digital cameras or even the web were around so there aren't that many.
Plus the name is so generic, just try googling it you get everything from barbells to ale. Even GW Skullcrushers doesn't help since they renamed Juggernauts that.
But I'll keep looking.

I remember the huge bewbs that the skeleton sorcerer had. I hope they stay true to the original artwork! I wish I still had my copy. My cousin's mom threw it away when I brought it over to his house. She said it was the "Devil's Game!" Sad...

A bit off topic but how was B-17 as a table top game? I only ever played Commodore 64 port.

B17 was a solo board game but since the bomber had 10 crew you could play as a gang, doing the actions of your individual crewman, unless he got shot of course. For added fun, if your plane was shot down, there was a chance of escaping back to the UK through the help of resistance fighters. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1032/b-17-queen-skies I'm pretty sure I've still got a copy. I might have a go of it over the Easter weekend.

Odd, will this be a UK release, or did they clear up the licensing issues that prevented it from coming to the USA back in the 80s?
I hope they had, because one of the older guys in my college fraternity always talked about this skeleton vs. barbarian game he played during a semester abroad in Edinburgh.

Even I'm getting sick of the "skulls in skin" theme going on with Khorne. Aren't the tactical skulls new though?
Overall I'm glad GW's mining their older releases, even though they're all new to me. Gives me a chance to play some classics I missed out on.

I found a possible pic of the new skeletons. It's the usual GW 'leak' quality but it seems like they're going to be new sculpts, not just the VC skeletons repurposed.

From the looks of the first pic GW have redone the old cardboard stand-up gravestones as plastic pieces. With some new designs!
Amazingly, it might be cheaper for GW now to mould intricate designs like the Celtic Cross or the Angle of Death in plastic than create elaborate cutters for cardboard.
Of course it's more to paint, but it's pretty easy to do gravestones by a basecoat and dry-brushing. It's worth varnishing too, given the amount of handling they get when you start throwing them around.

This is actually just annoying. Why can't they re-do the more popular stuff like Advanced Heroquest or even Warhammer Quest? Why go back as far as this, to a time when they were still just doing DnD distribution? I was about to complain that this game has a lot less replay-ability, but then I realised maybe that is why they are re-releasing this instead.
At least the models should be decent. The Deathwatch and Space Hulk models were amazing, so worst case scenario, we should get something to use with Frostgrave.

I wouldn't really expect a rerelease of Warhammer(or Age of Sigmar) Quest until around the holidays. They can maximize their sales around Black Friday/Christmas, instead of trying to squeeze blood from a stone during the Spring/Summer period.
Or they could hold on to it until they start getting into dire straights, like many people rumored Horus Heresy plastics to be.
