I'm in the middle of painting up 12 wargs and a chieftain for a 600 point tournament this Sunday, and it occurred to me that it could be fun to run an all warg list in the future.
Say:-
Warg Chieftain
12 Wild Wargs 171 points
12 Fell Wargs - 108 points (279)
12 Fell Wargs - 108 points (387)
12 Fell Wargs - 108 points (495)
11 Fell Wargs - 99 points (594)
People regularly run Goblin hordes, but I've never really heard of the Warg horde. Admittedly, it lacks Fury and might generally, and is vulnerable to bowfire. But it makes up for that with superb movement (10 inches a turn baby!), a sea of bodies that rivals any horde(59 total), and a nice Strength 4 across the army!
With most shield walls totalling about 15 each of sword/spear in that price range, you can literally run around them and engage from all sides (the Fell Warg's ability to charge without visuals allows this), defeating the standard shield wall formation. Archers you'll be on top of within three rounds of firing, max, less if you can utilise terrain in any way. I don't think it would be top tier, but it could certainly be competitive if played well, I think.

personal experience I will tell you this force can be absolutely devastating against infantry. against cavalry heavy, you will be in trouble. I fought a similar force ( smaller but with more chieftains) and it was a ___________censored_________ to manage, it was fast and got where it wanted.

Nope. Fell Wargs can be taken in warbands without a Hero under the Mirkwood list, along with spiders. Wild Wargs still require a hero as part of the Moria list, and you need a minimum of one hero from any list, but you can spam as many Fell Wargs as ally warbands as you like.

Aye. It's the Dark Denizens of Mirkwood list on page 62.
It's really the closest we can get to old Legions style lists. All I need is the one hero able to keep up, and I can spam out all the Fell Wargs I like. I really don't know why I don't see them taken more. Probably the physical price tag, £18 for six isn't cheap.

Yes Fell Wargs are so expensive. Would you consider getting Wild Wargs and maybe just giving them a different paint job?

I asked a tournament the other day if I could substitute Wild Wargs and the answer was no, they had to be model appropriate.
So I guess I have to decide whether or not I'm willing to spend a hundred and fifty quid to run the list!

That seems a bit rigid ... Still it is a really neat army idea and one I would be up to try myself!

Huh. Seems like kind of an... unreasonable ruling to me.
I've got a half dozen Fell Wargs and a half dozen Wild Wargs and I just mix and match them without any consideration (same thing with their mounted counterparts). The only time it might make any kind of difference would be if you were fielding a unit of Fells and a unit of Wilds in the same army, where you need to differentiate between them.

After the tourney performance of your wargs, any second thoughts about this list? Automatically Appended Next Post: mdauben wrote:he only time it might make any kind of difference would be if you were fielding a unit of Fells and a unit of Wilds in the same army, where you need to differentiate between them.
The list uses both. I would guess the TO is worried they would not be sufficiently distinguishable in terms of sculpt + paintjob.

D'oh! I didn't notice that at first.
Yeah, if you are going to bring both in the same list, you need some way to quickly and positively differentiate one from the other. In that case, requiring you to use the "correct" model for each warband isn't unreasonable.

Hrmmm...hard to say. One one hand, I learnt just how lacking in durability the wargs are. But on the flip side, the horde aspect, the mobility and the fact that they do hit hard at strength 4 would seriously help to compensate for that. Most armies in the 600 point range are primarily about 30-35 models I found. I suspect it would find it hard to hit top tier, but I'm confident that it would still be an effective list.
What could of more interest is to spam wargs as much as possible, but throw in a handful of cavalry and archers to give them that initial charge bonus. By bowling a frontline over, you'd make it a lot easier for the non-cavalry wargs to hit effectively whilst shielding them from being struck back at (due to models being knocked over). So at the 600 point range calculating quickly:-
Orc Captain with Warg and Shield
8 Warg Riders with Shield
4 Orc Trackers with Warg -203
Orc Captain with Warg and Shield
7 Warg Riders with Shield
3 Orc Trackers with Warg -179
10 Fell Wargs -90
10 Fell Wargs -90
1 Fell Warg - 9
1 Fell Warg -9
1 Fell Warg -9
1 Fell Warg - 9
That way, you're still utilising the swarming of the Fell Wargs along with their ability to attack from behind another model to one they don't have line of sight to. But you're still outnumbering most armies by a good warbands worth, and have the bonus that you can pick and choose your fights due to mobility. You have some minor ranged ability too. There's one last bonus which only occurred to me thanks to one opponent doing something similar with rangers of the north, which is the ability to take warbands of single Fell Wargs. Do it four times, and you can have the enemy deploy practically their entire warband before you put a single substantive unit down, giving you the bonus of seeing your opponents deployment before your own.

I'd like to try one myself, but I suspect I won't have the funds for a few months. Not to worry though, I'll get around to it eventually.

I will work on writing up a 300 or 400 point list and post it up. I like wargs and don't currently have enough LOL.
