Hey mates. My Astra Militarum Army is going well, and currently I am in the process of gathering and debating other Imperial Units to use as my allied forces to go with them. Other than using the Inquisition, Forgeworld Knights, and possible Gerantius the Forgotten Knight, I am seriously considering fielding an Allied Formation from the Militarum Tempestus. However, since I am not a huge fan of the Scion Models, I am planning on utilizing various kits to make my own Plastic Kasrkin, as I love the look of those models a lot better.

As it stands, I was planning on using the Hostile Environment Cadians as the starting point, as they come with the Respirators and the Backpacks right off the bat, and their Hot Shot Lasguns wouldn’t be an issue as they are basically the standard Lasgun with the cables added on. Other than that, the only real issue is trying to figure out how to make the Arms and Legs more armored to represent the Carapace Armor, and from looking online, I can see that will be a difficult thing to do.

If anyone has any ideas or options I could go to try and make my own Plastic Kasrkin I would greatly appreciate it. Did consider the Scion Leg’s, however it would be hard to do as the HE Cadians torsos are flat underneath, while the Scion Legs are rounded and require a lot of trimming to even be usable. If there was a way I could utilize or if there are kits that can be used to make Leg Armor, Knee and Elbow Pads, etc. that would great. Kinda sad that Forgeworld doesn’t listen to their IG Players because I know a lot of people would want Plastic/Resin Kasrkin, but until then any ideas or opinions would be a lot of help. Pictures are what I am referring to Armor wise for the Arms and Legs.

Why don't you want the metal ones?
They're still great models and will be similarly priced to a FW convertion.

Pretty simple actually. Had a Steel Legion Army once and not only was it a pain to transport them but they kept chipping and it was constant work of repainting then as well as fixing broken pieces. Would rather have a plastic army this time around.

One option is to green-stuff pads onto their legs and arms so they look like they are wearing carapace armor.

Another option is to use stormtroopers from Dreamforge Game’s line:

I bought a squad at my FLGS last year and painted them up as Tallarn stormtroopers. It comes to a little over $2 a trooper which is way cheaper than GW. Plus, the models are gorgeous.

By the way, for future reference, if you use a gloss varnish on metal miniatures then they will be far more resistant to chipping (but still not as resistant as plastics). This is what I've done with some of my Tallarn squads (the rest are dull-coated and they chip more easily than the gloss-coated one). And if you don't like the look of gloss, you can put some matte varnish over the gloss varnish to reduce them down to a sort of satin sheen.
