In the current game, how good are the dark Angels? My friend plays tau which is a little concern.. I know they aren't the strongest, but can they roll with the best?

Yeah, Eldar can dial that up pretty well too with cheap farseers. Unfortunately. Eldar can also go step on them with WKs, too.

A full DA bike list (Ravenwing?) has a pretty good chance of wrecking an Eldar list. Eldar have very little ignores cover and want to stay as far away from CC as possible (except the WK).
Scatterbikes and WarpSpiders will have a hard time chewing through 2+ Jink saves before those bikes are in their face assaulting them. You only really have to worry about WKs, D-scythe WG and Dark Reapers and I find that is really rare for all 3 of those to be in the same army list.

Dark angels are not one army like most books
We have
Greenwing: your standard footslogging or meched up marines, with most of what codex marines has, but not as good.
Deathwing: awful, high cost and low survivability, should be med cost high survivability.
Ravenwing: can be top tier depending on match up, very very good.
Mixed wing: all the great of ravening with all the dump of deathwing, can be effective in a friendly, not competitive.
On the whole if it was codex ravenwing, it would be a top tier army, but green and deathwing drag it down to solid mid.

DA are mid-tier (probably closer to the top than to the bottom). They can make some nice and competitive lists but are nowhere near the power of the 3 Great Cheeses (Eldar, Tau, Necrons). As Formosa said, it is only the Ravenwing part of the DA that is good. The rest of the codex sucks.

No, it most certainly is not...
What basic Greenwing DA's miss out on compared to their Vanilla cousins;
- Sternguard & special ammo. (Company Vets are simply Chaos Chosen +1, which is still pretty 'meh' overall, though Storm shield access helps a lot)
- Gravcents. (single most obnoxious & OP unit of any MEQ army)
- Land Speeder Storm for Scouts.
- better Chapter Tactics.
The Lion's Blade is IIRC, still essentially a Gladius Strike Force under a different name. DA's have ready access to Grav cannons w/ amp, which alone puts them lower top tier. (definitely well above KDK, but below the 'Big 4' of Eldar/Tau/Vanillas/Necrons)
Ravenwing Bikers can take the almighty Grav gun, while Black Knights are fearsome. Plus their cover save shenanigans are pretty dang sweet.
DA Dreads got in on the updated profile and thus come with 4A base. ( SW's meanwhile inexplicably missed out on this!)
As well, DA Scouts also got the upgraded boost to WS4/BS4.
Basically, with DA's you trade out better Chapter Tactics/ SC's, LSS Scouts & Gravcents for all the Ravenwing perks...
It's not enough to really put them quite on equal level with codex marines, but DA's are still a solid book, and between Ravenwing shenanigans and Thunderdome Superfriends, have a pair of very highly powered Tournament stomping lists.

Being Battle Bros with Vanilla Marines and Space Wolves, however, can easily fill any gaps that make them not top teir.
This is similar to the way Dark Eldar are not super low tier simply by being BBs with Eldar.
Sprinkle in a bit of top tier and your army is far from bad. The beauty of doing this with any Marine variant is that you don't really have to paint the other units different.
It would be perfectly acceptable to have an allied detachment with Grav Cents and paint them up like DA's. It would only be certain iconic units that would take a bit of explaining (like ThunderWolves or DreadKnights)

Made my girlfriend play with my buddies DA's the other day. Fielded some mech stuff for funsies because learning.. Damn Venerable Dread sends a squad of grots off the board with a flamer, punches 3 kanz, and then a deff dread. It was fantastic.
There is all the evidence you need, spam Venerable Dreads win games all day.
