So I was looking at my space marine codex I noticed all of them can take melta bombs. I also noticed that melta bombs can be used like any melee weapon so you can use them as a 5 point better power fist or thunder hammer. Is this cheese?

Welcome to Dakka.
There are some drawbacks to melta bombs in melee. One attack, and you can't use them against everything. It's not a bad idea to hand a few out, but far from cheese.

Unwieldy too, so dropping one on a Monstrous Creature is probably not going to work, though Concussive weapons can help prevent that.

I think you're confusing how melta-bombs work.
You cannot use them on infantry, only Vehicles and Monstrous Creatures (or bigger) and can only be used as 1 singular attack. Think of them as a 5pt, highly specific tool for use against vehicles with AV 12+. Against creatures they're only S8, AP1, with no gain from the "Melta" rule.
While a powerfist is more expensive, you can use it against all targets, gaining all of your attacks in your profile at pretty much the exact same stats as a meltabomb (S8, AP2).
Meltabombs are a convenience/hail mary pass type of weapon. You never -need- them, but they're a good contingency plan.
