As CSM, can I take a normal CAD and supplement it with a Crimson Slaughter CAD to give me 6 heavy weapon or 6 fast attack choices? If so, can I do this with other factions of Chaos as well, such as Thousand Sons or Death Guard?

Yeah. That allows maximization of the only good units they have, if that.

Most tournaments I have been in locally use ITC format rules, which allows you to...

"An army may duplicate a single Detachment, one time.
Example: A list may include 2 CADs, but not 3 CADs. Or, a single CAD, and 2 Allied Detachments. Or, 3 Formations, 2 of which are the same Formation, etc."

So that means I do not even have to use crimson slaughter if I do not want to, and can run 2 Chaos Undivided CADs?

Yes, if they use the ITC format at least. In our last ITC tournament locally, I ran double-CAD Khorne Daemonkin and it was allowed.

Also, you can't self ally but if you don't need so many FA or HS slots you can take Crimson Slaughter, Black Legion etc as allied detachments (or vice versa) meaning you also don't have to pay for so many troops.

Note, the 'unlocks [unit] as troops instead of elite' HQ choices only work in the detachment that includes your warlord. So as an example, only your warlord's detachment can take plague marines as troops.

Note that black legion can always take chosen as troops (regardless of whether it is primary detachment or not), likewise with crimson slaughter and possessed.

Could you explain how I cannot self ally (gw rule?) but I can take double CAD due to ITC?

You got me there... I don't understand why it was ruled that way. Probably because nobody said you couldn't, if I had to guess?

But here is the link to the ITC format Army Building guidelines:

Allied Detachments have a restriction that they can't be the same faction as your primary detachments.

One time I took double cad and spammed about 24 autocannons on 6 squads of havocs to fight Necron warriors and night scythes. still ended in a draw. :(

It depends how you define self ally.

By GW rules you can take as many Combined Arms Detachments (1HQ, 2 troop min) from the same faction. The only 'can't ally' restriction is you can't take an 'Allied Detachment' (the 1 HQ, 1 troop minimum) with the same faction as your warlord's faction.

Take a read through of the rule book for army building one more time, with our notes we've given you perhaps you'll better understand the details now?

I was missing that point of differentiation between a CAD and an Allied detachment, thanks for all the help hopefully this will make for some entertaining games
