At the end of the fight against the warp daemon? Zahariel, the Lion and the rest of the team is boarding a ship when Zahariel feels the Lion staring at him. Anyone care to help me understand the tension between the two.. I feel that I missed something?

Because he was there, and saw what he saw. Daemons and the warp is something people aren't supposed to know about, and the Imperium has a habit of (discretely) removing people who do. Plus, remember that the upper tiers of the Imperium have a reason not to trust Zahariel (remember the memories he has locked away in a quiet corner of his brain?).

The second book - Fallen Angels - does give a few more hints about this.

Short version: remember that whilst he's loyal to the Imperium, the Lion is a fairly bad judge of character and almost as massive a hypocrite as Russ. He may have done stuff to people for reasons.

The Lion was staring at Zahariel because he believed that Zahariel was Luther's accomplice in Luther's aborted murder of the Lion with the Saroshi bomb. The only reason that Zahariel even got brought down to the surface was because Librarian Israfael said that the only way to kill the Daemon was bringing Zahariel along, and then Israfael gets exiled along with Zahariel because of it.

In other words, the Lion thinks Zahariel tried to kill him.

Yeah, basically what the others have said. Just wanted to add though, it's a much maligned novel, but I really liked it.

I very much enjoyed it. Just some parts felt unanswered and vague. Thank you both for your answers. I can see where you both are coming from.

Off to begin the Fallen Angels then.

On a side note, is there a origin book for any of the other legions? Would love to here about Sanguinius time on Baal.

Unfortunately, all of the other HH books seem to foucs on the time period just before and during he HH, rather than delving into any origin stories.
