So I'd like to make an allied force for my CSM of some of the lower ranks of Chaos forces and a small stand alone force for fun. My question is: what out there works and is fun? I'd like to have some LRs and infantry blobs with decent weapons (so not cultists). I've perused the codex and IA13, but that doesn't always give you the right feel. Any experience or lessons learned from people on here? Did ordering IA13 go well or is chaos guard as good or better? Thanks in advance.

UA13 is generally better because they are battle brothers and do not have the chance of giving each other the evil eye instead.

Ah, very true. Didn't consider that.

IA13 and IA5 2nd are both in my opinion superior to Astra Militarum and with more customisation. There are only a few tanks they do not have access to. The choice is IA13 or Vraks, not guard or renegades.

Renegades are great. IG not so much from a rules perspective.

Can IG resurrect soldiers?

Not worried about judgment, just I don't have experience with either army but they both certainly interest me and I'm picking up models to build a force. I was looking for input and experience and it sounds like Renegades are a fun and good army to roll with.

Unending host can do well - head over to the battle report forum and you'll find some reports to see how it works. Personally ive done well with ordnance tyrant artillery spam (3x3 laser destroyers, 4 thudd guns and two wyverns) together with zombies, and either daemons, kdk or csm to provide speed.

Don't forget almost all the renegade forces are BS2 including the vehicles, artillery, etc so they are not exactly high quality!

If i was to join an escalation league. Would IG perform better than RH with the restrictions to not allow formations?

I feel that RH is a one/two trick pony and relies heavily on the 2 formations to be competitive. Also most list only work well above 1500. In an escalation league, i would need to make and fight lists at 350, 500, 750, 875, 1000, 1250 etc...

They're reliant on those formations to be super-ultra-hyper competitive against optimized Eldar / Tau / Gladius. Outside of those, they're still very strong.

The key is that they can get formations without getting formations via Demagogue specializations. So even without taking The Purge, your Artillery Tyrant still lets you spam mountains of artillery and shoot into your own close combats, ect,

Also keep in mind that R&H don't actually have formations.. they have detachments. It's a subtle but distinct difference. Formations are "You take these specific units and get X benefits", a detachment is "Get X unit slots (elites, fast attack, troops ect) to fill how you choose and get X benefits." So whilst you can play the game easily without formations, if you rule our detachments as well then everyone has to play unbound. This is because the basic Combined Arms Detachment is.. A detachment.

IA13 also has some special units you can use alongside your renegades, such as blight drones and decimators iirc

From a competitive standpoint, the question is what kind of army you want to play.

Horde of sacrificial minions is done better by renegades of either type.
Artillery spam us probably best via varks renegades. Cadian formation can be decent too.
Mutant assault horde is probably best with IA13.
Elite infantry aircav/mechanized are best with IG.
Psyker dominion is best via cadian psykana division.
Tank based force is IG domain (also cadian formation)
True calvary lists, are DKOK domain.

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. What list you should use depends on what you want from that list.
