Hey guys hit a rule wall, if my opponents army is entirely in drop pods, is it legal for them to have nothing on the board turn 1?

No its not illegal. But if he has nothing on the board at the end of a turn he loses automatically.

So if he has 9 pods and everything in him army is in them he doesn't deploy anything. During his turn he drops 5 pods. As long as they are on the board he is cool.

Yup.

Actually the rule about how many units you can have reserved was removed. So even a more traditional build can just reserve everything.

They, unlike the pods, will probably auto-loose turn 1.

The check to see if you have been tabled happens at the end of the game turn. So the pods will get their first wave down first turn and should be fine. If the pod player has first turn, they might still be tabled by return fire. But it should be unlikely.

There are a few other things that allow turn 1 reserves these days. Not sure if they are enough to build a null deployment list from, but they are out there.

Note that he must have models on the table at the end of the GAME turn, not PLAYER turn. So it's totally possible that you have the initiative and have no enemy to shot at in your turn.

And depending on the mission, uncontested access to all the objectives.

But yes, one of the major perks of a null deployment army is denying your opponent a turn’s worth of shooting.
