This is a "just for fun" rule. If you like it, have at it!
If a unit containing a Markerlight fails three Hit Rolls while firing Markerlights in a single shooting phase with rolls of 1, roll a D6 for each failed roll.

Consult the following table:
1 Is this thing on? The hapless wielder of the Markerlight stares directly into the barrel, waves it around, and generally behaves in an unsafe manner. The unit takes a Blind test as though they were an enemy unit, since none of them are prepared for this chucklehead.

2 What's that noise? The Markerlight was improperly sending coordinates to units firing Seeker Missiles in another section of the battlefield. The unit immediately suffers a single Seeker Missile hit, with no Cover Saves allowed as the Seeker Missile rides the Markerlight beam into the unit's position.

3 Damnit, Dave! This is Dave. Dave messes up a lot. The unit firing Markerlights cannot claim Cover Saves until your next Shooting Phase as he has accidentally set the beam to be visible in all spectrums of vision rather than the spectrums that the Tau utilize their helmet feeds with.

4, 5, 6 That could have been much worse... Nothing happens, beyond the Markerlights being unable to be fired until your next Shooting Phase. This does mean that you cannot utilize those Markerlights during a Supporting Fire action.

Love it, I need a model of a tau pathfinder staring into the barrel of a marker light now!

How about:

4 - Flashlight Surprise: Your foolish Shas'la has accidentally turned down the power output on his Markerlight! The Markerlight now counts as a Lasgun for the remainder of the game.

Ad some risk to psyc... I mean tau powers...who would have though?

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

That would be turning the power output up...

Lasguns actually damage things; Markerlights are just glorified laser pointers.

But that was the joke...

This is hilarious thank you for putting this up, not only do I like it though, I want to play against a Tau player who will use this rule.

One suggestion, change "Dave" To "Carl" google search "Damnit Carl" to find out why.

Oh I'm familiar with the "Damnit, Carl!" meme.

I just prefer to blame Dave for my woes. It's a long-held tradition for me that underperforming models are referred to as "Dave".

This is pretty cool. ^^;

I typically run MSU Pathfinders, so I'd suggest keeping track of all the 1's rolled to hit a single target, and then if they reach a critical mass all those 1's turn into perils. (The owner can decide which unit that shot the target with markerlights has to roll them, before they are rolled.)

I mean, you can get around the "three 1's in one unit" by running MSU markerlights, whereas this rule would discourage people from putting too many tokens on a single target. Which might help reassure players with weaker codexes maybe?

Idk, I'm probably overthinking it, I just really like this and wanted to try it. ^^;
