Let's take the following scenario: Low points (500-750) game, Necrons vs Space Marines. I'm running a Destroyer Cult of 10 Destroyers and 3 Heavy Destroyers, and obviously a Destroyer Lord. At that sort of point level, would it be more worth my time equipping the Lord with a Staff of Light/Solar Staff or a Warscythe/Voidreaper? On the one hand it's going to be more effective in close combat due to the extra attack on the charge, on the other it's my warlord and, whilst very hardy, could be better served taking potshots and staying out of direct combat. But then the Marines might find it harder to kill the Lord in combat than out. Thoughts?

You're gonna need the warscythe- Staff of Light is too short ranged, and most of the D-lord's capabilities are assault based anyhow.

I do realise it's rather awkward having a single assault model in a formation of shooty guys, especially since the ressurection orb was moved to crypteks (and confusingly replaced with a worse piece of wargear also called "ressurection orb" just to make conversations about it more stilted), and there's no such thing as a Destroyer Cryptek. Best thing to do is nominate one unit the "command" unit and have them charge things they can finish off. Use jump-shoot-jump and positioning to pressure your opponent.

Ultimately, if you don't try to use the Lord's assault capabilities, you're just treating him as a really pricey tax.

So I should run the Lord with one of the Destroyer squads and assault the whole lot, rather than use him to assault alone? I'd sacrifice majority toughness from 6 to 5 and be potentially wasting ~6 shots (and therefore about 4 potential armour-save-denying wounds) that the Destroyers could put out, in favour of the 3-6 attacks (0-1 wounds, ish) they can put out in assault. But then the Dlord wouldn't be focus fired, which would be likely as they're a known scary HQ, like a jetpack monstrous creature.

I'd say make him run alone with a warscythe. In a low-point game, he's likely to survive just fine and will wreck stuff in melee. He may get focus fired... but that will free up your regular destroyers to seriously cripple a marine force, limiting their future damage output.

He's absolutely durable enough to go at it alone.

There's two different Loadouts, but they're kinda the same and require an Artifact. Basically, you're either taking the Void Reaper or the Nightmare Shroud. It is cheaper to go with the Void Reaper (as there is no purchasing of a Warscythe on top of the Nightmare Shroud), so that's what I always do.
Then you just get the Phase Shifter and Orb, and Phylactery is optional.
