Calgar punching an Avatar of the Eldar in the face and being alive, even with a power fist, seems a little out there. Theres alot of things about Calgars fluff which is way out there considering that hes still s4 t4 like all the other Ultramarines... just saying

Killing an Avatar just means the writer think you know how to punch. It's not impressive at all at this point.

Funny thing is that example is probably one of the better displays of an Avatar. At least it kills a bunch of Space Marines before Calgar duels it.

Certainly better than "roar a challenge to the Swarmlord, get dogpiled by Carnifexes".

Honestly I find a load of Carnifexes killing it better than Calgar wins cause Calgar.

The Avatar almost singlehandedly turned the tide of battle against the Ultramarines. Calgar won because magic powerfists but the Avatar actually accomplished something in the battle. Calgar also promptly lost consciousness if I recall correctly. It was at least a close fight.

On Iyanden the Avatar was retconned into being incredibly useless and idiotic.

Is the small paragraph about the Death Korps bombing a city for 10 years, even after there was no lifesigns left still there?

Well Martel they do have some pretty awesome battles in their fluff. Like the time some 30 Death companists lead by Dante dropped straight into the orc horde at armageddon. Or the time Dante was in overall command over even the ultrasmurfs at armageddon. Or the time the Dante wannabe killed an bloodthirster with one hit.

Come to think of it, Dante might be the most outrageously fluffed character in the lore. He wasn't a very good marine. He tried his best though and during his career the BA chapter got close to wiped out. So they promoted a bunch of people who would never have made command otherwise, Dante was one of them. He then procceded to surviving where others died and in his timid ways made it through the red first and never succumed to the black rage. Now he's the oldest space marine ever (2000years), the one who's withstood the black range the longest, arguably the most respected space marine commander in the galaxy (at least logan grimnar and Marneus Calgar seem to think so, both having stepped down for him at various points) and a beast in the tabletop.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Clearly I'm misremembering the Calgar lore then.

So like everything else on Iyanden then?

Fair enough. It's easy to forget the details. Especially when the internet is full of people exaggerating what happened.

Seems like. Actually, the Eldar in general don't get shown that well from what I remember.

Yeah... a unit of Warp Spiders plotting out how they're going to be awesome and kill all the humans and are untouchable before an immolator runs over the wall they were hiding behind and heavy flamers them all to death in seconds is another good example of Eldar getting the shaft in fluff.

Or that time a Kroot squad ambushed and slaughtered some Alaitocii rangers.

Ulrik The Slayer messed up so many world eaters and daemons on Armageddon that ANGRON saluted him. I'm not complaining, that's super cool but I didn't think Angryron could do anything but rip and tear. I guess khorne cares not though.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

Angron has to be capable of doing things other than constantly fight because otherwise he'd just be butchering his own men. Intelligence of some form is a prerequisite for being part of an army.

If I recall correctly Ulrik killed three berserkers in single combat for which he received the salute. The days when the protagonist didn't carve a line from one side of the battlefield to the other.

I am being absolutely 100% serious. Those are both GW-published pieces of fluff. One from Codex: Sisters of Battle, and one from Chapter Approved: Kroot Mercenaries.

I think that's actually from the original tau codex.

And, honestly, I don't think it's too far-fetched. Kroot are shown to be much better trackers/hunters in fluff than on TT, and these rangers were very much in the kroot's home territory.

I miss the good old days of 5th edition where when I unpacked my elder models I was in for an uphill battle, had some amazing rules and most of my units were literally the best at the one thing they did but that was it... with 6th codex release Eldar went from a low tier codex with potential due to a large skill base to a top tier easy to play codex. then 7th edition craftworlds made them a faceroll to win codex. I still sometimes play them but you will never catch me with WK or more than 1 in 3 bikes having a shuri cannon (never scatter lasers) unless my opponent wans a tough tourney powered list...

that said to the fluff subject Maugen Ra having an avatar summoned to quench his weapon or using it to cleave a Trygon (or was it a Carnifex)

Going in a slightly different direction, the implication that the Harlequins put Asdrubael Vect in power was a pretty outrageous bit of 'just as planned'.
