Hello all!

So, Ive been on a hiatus from 40k for about 2 years and I come back to see the game is very different! I know it might sound crazy, but I almost don't even know where to start. I do see that Gee-dubs has put out some "get started" box sets like the old battle forces and they look pretty nice. What I was curious about is what some good suggestions be for armies that don't have one of them currently such as Dark Angels, Chaos Marines, Eldar, Dark Eldar and Sororitas. Id love some suggestions as to what would be a fair equivalent for those forces as I'm probably going to be fighting a friends Tau "get started" force and would want it to be fair.

thanks for any suggestions!

For DA and CSM, there's the dark vengeance box and their respective expansions. For Eldar they have their Battleforce as well as another bundle called 'wraith host.' For the Dark Eldar they don't have a bundle. I think... And the sororitas... Don't.

thanks for the reply!

I suppose I didn't consider the Dark Vengeance models, or the Eldar battle force. It's a fine line, to be honest, I don't want to ramp up any power gaming by any means, but I do want to start on the right foot against Tau )who are very damn good) and yes, fun is the primary but I don't want to get steam rolled every time.

For the listed armies I was just curious about suggestions as to how I could make a small "starter" force for any of them, that would be a fair match up against the Tau "get started" set.

Thanks!

Well my only suggestion for getting a starter force for one of those armies would be to buy one of the listed bundles.
Or if you're confident in list building and have a little extra cash, you could probably buy the codex for the army you want to field and build a list out of that and pick what models you want to use. According to your point limit of course.

I guess I'm not really sure where to start with the non-dark vengeance armies. 7th edition seems so different. It seems like the "get started" sets have an HQ, a Troop and then one Elite or Fast, so I guess that would be a good place to start..

Thanks again!

I wouldn't mind a harlequin get started box since I'll need at least one of anything anyway.

That's true. They look awesome!I wouldn't mind adding them to an eldar army, if I could get one going haha

There are a lot of bundles you can get directly from GW and they provide a good start for your army. Might want to check out ebay for some cheap starter stuff. You can build a lot for relatively cheap if you get bundles from ebay.

I wouldn't be too worried about the Tau get started box, Tau do better with more points and Tau without marker lights aren't much of an issue (Plus the formation included in the box isn't to strong.)

DV set gets you there, with two armies? You can field with both one HQ, one troop choice, one elite or fast attack? You even can combine, once chapter master, other time librarian, once terminators, once bikes. Or once chaos lord, the other time vrosh tattersoul, or proxy sorcere? Once chosen as elite, once Helbrute? About 400-700 points matches easily achievable? Chiepest and best way?

Tau have cheese, but they've exploitable weaknesses that can make a lot of their lists crumble.

Also, except the plasma cannon dude, all DA models are easy to convert to CSM models with a knife, glue a few chaos bitz and some creativity.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

No, but there is a formation in the codex.

CSM is in pretty rough shape currently, but the new formations MAY help them out. If you want a moderately competitive Chaos option, try out Daemons; they're still chaos, and have two Get Started boxes already, and both are amazing purchases. Or get a DV CSM setup, plus a Get Started Khorne and run a Khorne Demon Kin army. You definitely have variety as an option with chaos.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
