A couple weeks ago a couple of club members got together at Adepticon to run our annual Mech Attack game in 28mm.
This is the 4th year we've run Mech Attack at a convention and the second year we've done it at Adepticon.  This year we expanded from the mechs-only game we did previously to a combined arms game that strongly rewarded use of infantry to seize objectives and APC's to move them around.  It was very successful and was definitely more tactical than previous games which were more of a mad dash to stop the objectives with Mechs.

More pics and the AAR for the convention game, and the 10mm (with Rebased Mechwarrior clix) practice game can be seen here.

As you can see below we use a wide variety of models.  We have units from Void, Kryomek, Sedition Wars, Vor, AT43, Dust, Mechwarrior Die Cast, Robotech Toys, Robogear as well as Macross, Gasraki and Gundam model kits and others I've probably forgotten.  We used the Mech Attack ruleset which I described to passers-by as Battletech with 1/10 as many rules and plays in 1/4 the time. As always, the newbies who showed up to play had no trouble grasping the rules and pretty soon most of them were playing with almost no input from us.

A few pics to entice you to view the full report:
The Battlefield. All this terrain nearly fills my car, but I still want to build a bit more...

I finally got around to making a train (a Cheap toy with a few mods) for our train station.

Gorgeous table set up!

Ever since first laying eyes on Armorcast's large-scale `Mechs I have wanted to play Battletech at this scale.

Any plans to incorporate the old Tyco Btech toys into the mix?

Thanks, I also was influenced early by the Armorcast mechs. They were positively inspirational!

As it turns out I actually acquired the Tycho Btech toys. They are probably among the truest 28mm scale of all the toys/models I bought. Unfortunately they also tower over the other mecha I have and I decided not to use them. Most of the mechs I use are honestly more in the 22-25mm range even tough they look great on the table with 28mm figs.

I also got some of the larger Robotech toys but the had similar problems. Technically good scale, but practically-speaking they are larger than the rest of m collection.

I did a comparison post of all the various Mecha models and toys I acquired here:

I sold a couple, but I think I've still got a Thor, Bushwacker, axeman, elemental, as well as a Glaug, tactical battlepod and two sizes of invid that I'd be willing to sell.

The Train is a cheap toy I found at the resale shop. It wasn't working but it had one of those setups where it was motorized to randomly drive around and it had light and sound. I pulled all that out and just set it on top of the tracks.

Just like this, I think

Seems a bit expensive at 15 bucks, even if does look nice painted.
Luckly, there's also a cheaper version that has a basic interior, clear windows and a slightly more realistic roof.

I also have this train waiting for paint...

It's a better value and better proportioned overall for 28mm, even if it is a bit chibi in length.

The doors on both are too small. On the smaller train I glued on some doors I cut from pieces of Mantic Battlezone sprue. On the bigger train, they aren't as small so I'll just leave them as-is.

I'm also liking the angular look of this similar one so much that I might buy it and paint it up instead of the blue one above..

That looked like a really fun game. I like how the infantry are on huge round bases. Did that make moving them through terrain harder or easier?

Thanks!
The movement trays (textured and painted CD's) made movement much easier. The terrain in the game is pretty abstracted, so if a unit moved into a building it was considered to be occupying the entire structure and could shoot out of one chosen side in a given turn. When moving into terrain, the player can either place the whole tray on top of the building (as seen in some of the pics) or take the tray off the table and put one figure on top.

It also made APC's easy to track as any APC with a troop unit simply had a single figure placed on or next to the vehicle. The troops had already been placed on the trays so when the unit disembarked we just had to put the tray on the table.

We made far more CD movement trays than we needed and I look forward to using them in future games. We've already tried them in the fantasy game Dragon Rampant which uses groups of minis in loose formation and they were quite effective. I also plan to use them with Warpath when the new rules come out. We've played the early 1.0 Warpath mass rules before and moving such huge masses of figs slows up what is otherwise a very fast-moving game. This should make it much easier. I even think that 40k players could make use of them in large or apocalypse size games.

It's a reasonably big pic, but here's a shot of them with troops alongside other vehicles and mecha.
